rSofia’s POV
The morning came soft and gold, streaks of sunlight sliding through the blinds and landing across my face. I woke with the faint scent of Matteo still clinging to the sheets coffee, smoke, and rain. He was gone by the time I opened my eyes, but the imprint of where he’d lain beside me remained warm.
For a while, I just lay there, staring at the ceiling, trying to convince myself that everything was normal. That I could still keep pretending Ohio was safe.
I showered, dressed, and tied my hair back in a low bun before heading out to work. The small jewelry shop smelled faintly of polish and metal comforting, ordinary scents that had become my refuge. I smiled at Mrs. Dunn, the elderly owner, and took my usual place behind the counter.
The bell above the door jingled sometime around noon, and when I looked up, my breath caught.
“Isabella?”
She grinned same smile I remembered from summers in Italy. When we met during one of my vacations. “You’re surprised to see me?”
I hurried around the counter and pulled her into a hug. “You’re the last person I expected to walk in here!”
She laughed, eyes bright with mischief. “I could say the same. I had to blink twice when I saw you through the window. Sofia Romano, working retail? I thought hell froze over.”
I rolled my eyes. “I needed something real, Bella. Something simple.”
She tilted her head, studying me like she always used to when she sensed I was hiding something. “You look different. Softer. Happier… but also guilty. What’s going on?” Why is a runaway bride doing here?
I busied myself rearranging bracelets on the counter. “Nothing.”
“Liar.” Isabella leaned against the glass display, her grin turning knowing. “It’s Matteo, isn’t it?”
My hands froze. “What about him?”
“Oh, please.” She crossed her arms. “Don’t ‘what about him’ me. You think I wouldn’t recognize that look in your eyes? The same one you had when you were sixteen and he used to drive you crazy?”
I sighed, trying and failing to hide a small smile. “It’s complicated.”
“It always is with you two.” She softened, her voice dropping lower. “You’re playing with fire again, Sofi. If Cole finds out"
“Don’t say his name,” I interrupted, my chest tightening.
She nodded slowly. “Then at least promise me you’re being careful. Ohio’s not far enough to hide from that world forever.”
I looked down at the counter, tracing the edge of a ring with my fingertip. “I know.”
Matteo’s POV
Travelling back to New York, wasn't as easy as I thought, Cole men were everywhere but I was able to pull up with the help of Nico. The Romano mansion felt different tense, quiet, waiting for something to happen.
Luca’s voice broke that silence when I stepped into his office. “You’re going back.”
I frowned. “Back?”
“Ohio,” he said flatly. “Cole’s men are still out there. They think you helped Sofia escape. If they find you first, they’ll kill you.”
I leaned against the desk, meeting his cold stare. “So you want me to go back into the fire?”
“I want you alive,” Luca snapped. “You’re the only one who knows where she is, and I can’t lose another piece in this war. Go to her if you must, get her somewhere safe and bring her back home.”
His words carried weight, part command, part confession of fear.
I nodded once. “Understood.”
He turned away, lighting a cigar. “And Matteo… if Cole’s men reach her before you do don’t hesitate.”
That final instruction sat heavy in my gut. I knew what he meant. Don’t let her be taken alive.
Sofia’s POV
By evening, the day’s calm had started to unravel. Isabella and I closed up shop together, laughing about old times and pretending the world wasn’t closing in around us.
As she headed for her car, she turned to me and said, “Whatever you’re hiding, Sofi… be smart about it. Some ghosts don’t stay buried.”
Her words echoed long after she drove off.
The wind picked up, cold and sharp. Across the street, I thought I saw a black car idling, headlights dimmed. For a second, I froze, every instinct screaming at me to move.
When I blinked, it was gone.
But deep down, I knew better. Cole’s men were still hunting. And soon, this quiet little town would burn just like New York did.
