I took a deep breath as I opened the door and plastered a smile on my face. “Hi, Rob!” I said cheerfully. “It’s so good to see you!”

I sounded fake to myself, but I prayed he wouldn’t notice. No such luck.

“You’ve been crying,” he said, point blank.
