A Tangled Web
Damian's usually gentle and kind eyes transformed into a steely gaze. He shot me a piercing look and demanded, "What did you say to him?" His voice carried a restrained anger, deep and rumbling.
Feeling my nerves jangling, I swallowed hard under the weight of their intense scrutiny.
"I told him no, Damian. I couldn't betray you."
Damian's expression softened slightly, but the tension between the brothers was thick in the air. He turned to Darius, his jaw clenched. "You had better keep your distance from her," he warned. "This is our business."
Darius let out a cold, mocking chuckle. "Oh, Damian, always playing the protector. But Rose is a grown woman. She can make her own choices."
"I already have," I interrupted, my voice stronger than I felt. "I've chosen Damian."
Darius's eyes flickered with an unreadable emotion, maybe anger or disappointment. "Fine then," he said slowly. "But remember, Rose, every choice comes with consequences."
With that, he turned and vanished into the night, leaving Damian and me alone in the dimly lit alley. I could sense Damian's gaze on me, filled with curiosity and worry.
“Why didn't you tell me earlier?” he inquired in a softer but still worrisome tone.
“I didn’t recognize how,” I admitted. “I became scared, Damian. He’s your brother, and he… he seemed so determined.”
Damian sighed, running a hand through his hair. “Darius has continually been a problem,” he stated. “But now he’s crossed a line. I need to protect you, Rose. You mean too much to me.”
His phrases sent a shiver through me, a mixture of fear and heat. “I can cope with myself, Damian,” I insisted, trying to sound braver than I felt. “But I appreciate your problem.”
He stepped closer, his hand attaining to gently contact my arm. “Rose, I will not allow him to harm you. I promise.”
I nodded, feeling a bit more reassured but still on the part. “What will we do now?” I asked.
Damian’s eyes darkened with resolve. “We will turn the tables,” he said. “If Darius wants to play games, we’ll beat him on our own. And I think I realize a way to do it.”
I shivered, more from the depth of his gaze than the cool nighttime air. “Damian, there’s something I want to ask you,” I commenced hesitantly.
“What is it, Rose?” he asked, his expression softening again as he looked at me.
“Why did you return to the brothel on your own tonight? After you left the night of the poisoning incident, I imply,” I asked, searching his face for solutions.
Damian’s jaw tightened slightly, and he went away, a stricken look in his eyes. “I had my reasons,” he said after a second.
“What motives?” I pressed, needing to understand. “You disappeared so unexpectedly after the whole thing occurred. I was worried about you.”
He sighed deeply, running a hand through his hair. “I had to ensure you were safe, Rose. I didn’t want to attract any more interest to you or the place.
“But that's not all, is it?” I asked, my voice trembling slightly. “I suggest, why did you come back? You could’ve dispatched someone else.”
Damian’s shoulders slumped, and he checked me with a combination of regret and sincerity. “I felt bad for leaving you behind without a word, Rose. I came again to test up on you, to ensure you were alright. I shouldn’t have left like that in the first place.”
I blinked, shocked by his admission. “You came back for me?”
“Yes,” he said, his voice uncooked with emotion. “I couldn’t forestall thinking about you, about how I would possibly have left you susceptible. I needed to see for myself that you were safe.”
My coronary heart swelled with conflicting feelings. “Damian, you don’t have to take that burden alone. I changed into scared too scary, we may want to confront it together.”
He reached out and took my hand, his contact warm and reassuring. “I realize that now. I need to have trusted you extra, trusted us extra. I’m sorry, Rose.”
Tears stung my eyes, but I their lower back. “It’s all right, Damian. We’re right here now, and we’re going to get through this together.”
Damian and I devised a plan to outwit Darius. We spent hours discussing each detail, looking ahead to every viable circular he would possibly make. The tension among us grew, no longer from distrust, but from the load of the stakes we were gambling on.
“We started collecting records. I’ll talk with a number of my contacts, and see what they know. You can help by keeping an ear out for any talk within the brothel. People tend to let their defense down there.”
“I can do this,” I stated, feeling a sense of purpose. “And Damian, thanks for trusting me.”
He smiled slightly, a glimmer of warmth in his eyes. “We’re a crew, Rose. We’ll get through this collectively.”
The night deepened and the plan solidified. Damian and I parted ways. He disappeared into the shadows, a silent protector, even as I made my way to the brothel again.
As I moved through the crowded essential room, my mind hummed with the information of our plan. As I reached the lead staircase to my room, I heard an acquainted voice at the back of me.
“Well, properly, look who’s sneaking in again,” Lily said, her tone laced with suspicion.
I turned to look at her leaning against the wall, arms crossed and a smirk playing on her lips. Lily had constantly been the pointy-tongued, quick-witted one among us. However, that night there had been a risky glint in her eyes.
“What do you want, Lily?” I asked, seeking to keep my voice consistent.
“I overheard your little chat with Damian,” she said, her smirk widening. “Sounded pretty severe.”
My heart sank. If Lily had heard, there was no telling what she might do with those statistics. “Lily, you don’t understand. It’s complex,” I started, hoping to appeal to any experience of loyalty she might have left.
“Oh, I apprehend flawlessly,” she interrupted, her voice dropping to a venomous whisper. “You’re plotting something with him. Something that includes Darius.”
“It’s not what you saw,” I said, desperation creeping into my voice. “Damian is trying to guard us. Darius is dangerous.”
Lily laughed, a harsh, mocking sound. “Protect us? Or shield you? What makes you so special, Rose? Why do I need to trust something you say?”
“Because it’s the truth,” I insisted, my frustration developing. “Darius is plotting towards Damian. He attempted to apply to me to get to him. If we don’t prevent him, things will get worse.”
Lily’s eyes narrowed. “And what’s in it for me if I keep quiet?”
I hesitated, understanding I had little to offer. “What do you want, Lily?”
