My body froze.

It felt as though the world had stopped moving. The wind, the birds, even the rustling leaves, and everything went quiet, like someone had pulled sound out of the air.

“What…?” The word scraped out of my throat. My chest tightened so fast it hurt. “Lose him? What... what do you mean?"

He turned his back to me and started walking toward the house. Before he stepped inside, he looked over his shoulder.
