Without paying attention to my surroundings, I cross the street and head into my usual café. Just as I’m about to walk past someone standing in my way, I recognize who it is—and my expression hardens.

“We need to talk,” she says, stepping forward.

“I have nothing to say to you,” I reply coldly, moving to walk around her. But her next words stop me dead in my tracks.

“It’s about your wife. Trust me, you’ll want to hear this…”
