James Mitchell appeared in my office doorway at 8:15 AM without an appointment and Janet looked apologetic as she hovered behind him.

"I'm sorry Miss Rose, he said it was urgent and –"

"It's fine Janet, thank you." I gestured for James to come in, even though my stomach twisted with anxiety, because James was Alexander's right hand and nothing good ever came from surprise visits by your enemy's closest ally.
