Chapter 66: The Trial of Champions - Final Battle

POV: Xavier

Pain radiated through my entire body as I struggled to stand. Ravencrest's single strike had felt like being hit by a freight train. My ribs were cracked, maybe broken. Blood filled my mouth.

But I forced myself up anyway, because Thelma was facing an eight hundred year old vampire lord alone.

She circled Ravencrest in her massive Alpha wolf form, golden fur blazing with power. They moved around each other like predators, each looking for an opening.

"You have your ancestor's fire," Ravencrest said, with genuine admiration in his voice. "The hybrid would be proud. Shadowfang burned with that same intensity before I killed him."

"You killed our ancestor?" Thelma growled.

"Five hundred years ago. He was magnificent, just like you. But magnificence doesn't guarantee survival."

Ravencrest attacked first, moving faster than I could track. His claws raked across Thelma's shoulder, drawing blood. She countered immediately, her jaws snapping at his throat. He dodged, but barely.

They exchanged blows that shook the arena. Each strike had enough force behind it to kill a normal wolf or vampire. But these weren't normal fighters. They were both incredibly powerful, neither able to gain a clear advantage.

I realized what Thelma was doing. She was buying time. Time for me to recover, time for Luna and Kael to defeat the other vampire champions.

Looking across the arena, I saw Luna and Kael fighting together against Seraphine. The dhampir witch was powerful, but she couldn't match the coordination of two wolves working as a unit.

Kael feinted left while Luna attacked from the right. Seraphine tried to defend against both, but she was a fraction too slow. Luna's jaws clamped down on the vampire's arm. Kael's silver blade pierced her chest.

Seraphine screamed, dark magic exploding from her in a desperate final attack. The blast threw both wolves backward, but when the smoke cleared, the dhampir lay motionless on the ground. One vampire champion down.

Malakai roared in fury, charging at Luna while she was vulnerable. But I was moving before I could think. Despite my injuries, I intercepted him, tackling the massive vampire to the ground.

We rolled, each trying to gain the upper position. Malakai was stronger, but my True Alpha power helped me match him.

That left The Silent One. He stood perfectly still, watching everything with those empty ancient eyes. Then he opened his mouth.

The scream that emerged wasn't sound, it was a weapon. Sonic waves rippled through the air, visible distortions that shattered stone and cracked bones. Kael, closest to The Silent One, took the full force of the attack.

I watched in horror as Kael's body jerked like a puppet with cut strings. Blood poured from his ears and nose. He collapsed, convulsing.

"No!" Luna screamed, running toward him.

The Silent One prepared another scream, this one aimed at Luna. But he never got the chance to release it. Theo appeared, launching himself over the arena barrier with pure desperate strength. He wasn't supposed to be fighting. He was part of the stakes, part of what was being fought for.

But the Oracle didn't stop him. The trial had moved beyond rules into something more primal. Pure survival.

Theo shifted mid air, his own Alpha wolf form erupting with power. He slammed into The Silent One before the vampire could scream again, driving him away from Luna and the wounded Kael.

"Stay away from her!" Theo snarled.

He and The Silent One clashed, and I felt more than saw the twin bond between Theo and Thelma activate. White gold light erupted from both of them, connecting them across the distance.

Thelma felt her brother's power joining hers. She attacked Ravencrest with renewed ferocity, forcing the vampire lord back several steps.

"Magnificent!" Ravencrest laughed, genuinely delighted. "You're the first true Alpha twins in five centuries! This is better than I could have hoped for."

I finally managed to throw Malakai off me. My body screamed in protest, but I ignored it. We were winning. Barely, impossibly, we were actually winning.

Then I remembered the poison.

Damien's vial, the one Thelma had thrown out the window. But Damien could have given me more than one. I checked my pockets frantically and found it. A second vial, hidden in an inner pocket.

The poison that could kill vampires. That could kill Ravencrest. All I had to do was coat my claws and land one hit. Just one, and the vampire lord would die.

I looked at the vial, feeling the weight of the decision. Honor versus pragmatism. Fair fight versus survival.

What would a True Alpha do?

Thelma and Ravencrest continued their battle, both beginning to tire. During a brief pause, Thelma ended up fighting back to back with me. We faced our opponents together, moving in perfect synchronization even though I couldn't remember our past.

"I wish I remembered everything we were," I said quietly.

"We still are," Thelma replied. "We're just finding our way back."

Our bodies moved together like we'd been fighting as partners for years. The broken mate bond guided us, connecting us in ways that transcended memory. It was beautiful and heartbreaking all at once.

From the sidelines, I caught Damien watching me. His expression was unreadable. Was the poison a test? A trap? Or genuine help?

Ravencrest suddenly changed tactics. Instead of fighting Thelma directly, he moved with blinding speed toward Luna. She was injured, vulnerable, still trying to help the wounded Kael.

Ravencrest grabbed Luna by the throat, lifting her off the ground. His claws extended, positioned at her jugular.

"Enough of this," Ravencrest announced. "Surrender the twins, or I rip her throat out. You have three seconds."

"No!" Theo screamed, abandoning his fight with The Silent One.

Luna struggled in Ravencrest's grip, but she couldn't break free. Blood already dripped from where his claws pressed into her skin.

"Three," Ravencrest counted.

I looked at the poison vial in my hand. This was it. Use the poison, kill Ravencrest by deception, save Luna's life. It was pragmatic, logical, the smart choice.

"Two."

But was it the right choice?

True Alphas weren't created through pragmatism. They were created through selfless honor, through choosing what was right even when it was hard. That's what had awakened my power in the first place.

"One."

I made my choice.

I threw the poison vial away with all my strength. It sailed across the arena and shattered harmlessly against the far wall.

"No!" Damien shouted from the sidelines. "What have you done?"

"We win with honor," I said clearly, "or not at all."

Ravencrest laughed, cruel and delighted. "Foolish. Noble, but foolish. Now watch your friend die for your principles."

But something unexpected happened.

My rejection of the poison caused my True Alpha power to surge. The golden light that had been flickering inside me exploded outward, brighter and stronger than ever before.

Honor and selflessness were what created True Alpha status. By recommitting to those principles in the hardest moment, I'd made myself stronger.

The golden light extended from me to Thelma through our broken mate bond. She gasped as power flooded into her. The light continued to Theo through their twin bond, amplifying his strength. From Theo to Luna through their new mate bond. And even to Kael through the pack bonds that connected all wolves.

All five of us were suddenly connected, our individual powers combining into something far greater than the sum of its parts.

Ravencrest felt the surge of power and released Luna, stepping back. For the first time, I saw genuine uncertainty in his ancient eyes.

"Now THIS is what I was hoping for!" he shouted. "FINALLY, a real fight!"

We attacked as one.

Five wolves, connected by bonds of love and loyalty and honor, moving with perfect coordination. Every strike from one of us was supported by the others. Every defense was shared across all of us.

The battle that followed was apocalyptic.

The arena barriers cracked under the force of our combined power. Magical seals that had held for centuries broke like glass. The ground itself split, fissures spreading outward from where we fought.

Ravencrest fought with everything he had, eight hundred years of power and skill unleashed without restraint. He was magnificent, terrifying, nearly unstoppable.

But nearly wasn't enough. Thelma struck from the left while I attacked from the right. Theo came from above while Luna circled behind. Even wounded Kael contributed, his silver blade finding openings in Ravencrest's defense.

The vampire lord was bleeding now, his elegant clothing torn and stained. He was tiring, slowing, losing ground.

We were winning. Then Ravencrest did something none of us expected. He stopped fighting. He held up his hand, a universal gesture of surrender. "Enough. I forfeit the Trial."

Everyone froze in shock.

"What?" Thelma gasped.

Ravencrest straightened his torn clothing, his red eyes shining with respect. "You've proven yourselves worthy. Stronger together than separately. The twins may remain with the wolves."

Relief flooded through me, but Ravencrest wasn't finished.

"But know this," he continued. "The blood debt from five hundred years ago is not erased, merely postponed. One day, I will call on the twins for a favor of equal value. When I do, they cannot refuse, or all vampire covens will declare war on all wolf packs. Do you accept these terms?"

Before anyone could answer, the arena's magical barriers exploded.

Not from our battle, but from an external attack. Something had breached Silver Moon pack's defenses from outside.

The Oracle's face went pale. "The ancient enemy I prophesied. It's here. And it's not vampires."

Through the smoke and debris, a figure walked forward. Female, dressed in modern black combat gear, with eyes that glowed an unnatural blue.

She smiled, cold and clinical. "Hello, wolves. Hello, vampires. My name is Dr. Cassandra Vex, and I represent the Human Genetic Research Institute. We've been studying supernatural creatures for fifty years. And now we're ready to harvest you. All of you."

Behind her, dozens of soldiers in tactical gear appeared. They carried weapons that hummed with technology that shouldn't exist. Energy weapons, electromagnetic devices, things that looked like science fiction made real.

"Surrender peacefully for experimentation," Dr. Vex announced, "or we'll take you by force. Either way, the age of supernatural dominance is over. The age of human supremacy through science has begun."

She raised her hand, and the soldiers raised their weapons. Aimed at all of us. Wolves and vampires alike. The real war had just begun..
