Chapter 65: The Trial of Champions - Part Two

POV: Theo

The mate bond with Luna burned through me like fire, connecting us in ways I'd never imagined possible. Every hit she took, I felt. Every surge of her Alpha power, I shared. We were separate bodies but somehow one being, fighting together despite the distance between us.

I clutched the arena barrier, my hands pressed against the invisible wall that kept me from reaching her. Through our bond, I could feel her exhaustion, her pain, her absolute determination not to surrender.

"Come on, Luna," I whispered. "You can do this."

In the arena, Luna circled the three vampire champions in her massive Alpha wolf form. Silver fur gleamed with both sweat and blood. She'd broken Malakai's neck minutes ago, a sickening crack that echoed across the arena. He lay twitching on the ground, regenerating but temporarily out of the fight.

Seraphine hissed, her dhampir features fully revealed now. Her eyes glowed red, fangs extended, and dark magic swirled around her hands like living shadows.

"You're strong, little Alpha," Seraphine said. "But strength alone won't save you."

She unleashed blood magic, crimson energy that shot toward Luna like spears. Luna dodged the first two, but the third caught her shoulder. She howled in pain as the magic burned into her.

Through our bond, I felt the agony. My own shoulder burned sympathetically, and I gasped.

"Theo!" Thelma grabbed my arm. "Are you okay?"

"I feel what she feels," I managed. "The mate bond, it's connecting us completely."

The Silent One moved then, and seeing him in action was terrifying. He'd been still for most of the fight, observing, waiting. Now he struck with three hundred years of combat experience distilled into perfect precision.

He was faster than Malakai, more skilled than Seraphine. Every strike targeted a weakness, every movement was calculated and deadly.

Luna tried to defend, but she was fighting two opponents simultaneously. The Silent One's blade, a weapon that seemed to be made from bone, sliced across Luna's leg. She stumbled, blood pouring from the wound.

I felt her leg give out, and felt her hitting the ground.

"No!" I shouted.

Seraphine raised her hands, gathering dark magic for a killing blow. The Silent One positioned his blade at Luna's throat.

Then Kael appeared.

He leaped into the arena from the champion's side, landing between Luna and the vampires. His blade was already drawn, gleaming with silver coating.

"The rules say three versus three," Kael announced. "They broke formation first when all three attacked Luna together. I'm balancing the scales."

"Violation!" Ravencrest shouted. "You interfere, you forfeit."

The Oracle stepped forward. "Vampire treachery permits wolf adjustment. The rules were already broken when your champions ganged up on a single opponent. Kael's entry restores balance."

Ravencrest's face twisted with anger, but he couldn't argue with the Oracle's interpretation of ancient law.

Kael didn't wait for approval. He attacked Seraphine with the fury of someone seeking redemption. His blade moved in patterns designed specifically to counter magic users. He'd hunted dark witches for years and knew how to disrupt their spells.

Seraphine shrieked as Kael's silver blade cut through her magic defenses, scoring a deep cut across her arm.

Luna struggled to her feet, limping but determined. She faced The Silent One, who watched her with empty, ancient eyes.

They clashed again, Alpha power versus centuries of vampire skill.

Through our mate bond, I felt Luna's determination. But I also felt something else, something building inside me. Power, responding to hers, growing stronger with every passing second.

"Theo, your eyes," Thelma said, her voice shocked. "They're glowing!"

I looked down at my hands. Golden light flickered around my fingers, matching the silver light surrounding Luna in the arena. Our Alpha powers were resonating, amplifying each other through the mate bond.

I'd never felt anything like this before. It was like Luna's awakening had triggered something dormant in me, drawing out abilities I'd never known I had.

"I can help her," I said, understanding flooding through me. "Through the bond, I can channel power to her."

"How?" Thelma asked.

"I don't know. I just know I can."

I focused on the mate bond, on the golden thread connecting Luna and me. I pushed my own Alpha power through that connection, feeding it to her across the distance.

In the arena, Luna's silver glow brightened. Her wounds began healing faster. Her movements became stronger, more confident.

Through our bond, I whispered to her. "I'm with you. Every step. Every breath. We're in this together."

Luna's mental voice came back, filled with love and gratitude. "I feel you. Thank you."

She attacked The Silent One with renewed strength, forcing him back. Kael pressed Seraphine, his blade dancing in patterns that kept the dhampir witch off balance.

For a moment, I thought we might actually win.

Then Malakai regenerated. His neck snapped back into place with a horrible cracking sound. He rose, his face twisted with rage. He'd been defeated by a newly awakened Alpha, and his pride couldn't tolerate it.

"Enough playing," Malakai snarled. "Time to end this."

He rejoined the fight, and suddenly it was three vampires against two wolves again. Luna and Kael were already injured, already exhausted. Adding a fresh Malakai tipped the scales impossibly against them.

Malakai charged Luna from behind while she fought The Silent One. She couldn't defend against both.

Xavier saw it happening. I watched him tense, watched the decision form in his golden True Alpha eyes.

"No," I said, knowing what he was about to do. "Xavier, don't."

But he was already moving. Xavier leaped over the barrier, entering the arena in a blur of motion. He tackled Malakai mid charge, driving the vampire away from Luna.

"Xavier, no!" the Oracle shouted. "You've broken the rules. Forfeit!"

Ravencrest's laughter echoed across the arena. "The True Alpha shows his impulsiveness. How delightful."

Xavier stood, positioning himself between Malakai and Luna. "I don't care about your ancient traditions or your trials. My friends are dying. Forfeit be damned."

Ravencrest's smile widened, showing all his fangs. "You want to join the fight? Then let's make this interesting. Four against four."

He stood from his seat at the arena's edge.

"I'm entering the arena myself."

The entire crowd gasped. Whispers erupted everywhere. Ravencrest hadn't fought personally in two hundred years. He was too powerful, too ancient. Letting him fight was suicide.

"This violates every principle of the Trial!" the Oracle protested.

But Ravencrest was already moving. He crossed into the arena so fast I couldn't track the movement. One moment he was at the edge, the next he was standing in the center, surrounded by combatants.

His power was overwhelming. It pressed down on everyone like a physical weight. Even Malakai and the other vampire champions stepped back instinctively, giving their lord space.

"Let's see if you're worthy of that True Alpha title, boy," Ravencrest said, focusing on Xavier. "Because I've killed three True Alphas in my lifetime. You'll be my fourth."

Xavier barely had time to react before Ravencrest attacked. The vampire lord moved faster than anything I'd ever seen. His backhanded strike hit Xavier so hard the True Alpha flew across the entire arena. Xavier crashed into the magical barrier with force that should have shattered bones.

The impact crater he left in the barrier proved his True Alpha durability. A normal wolf would have died instantly. But Xavier survived, though barely.

He slid down to the ground, blood pouring from his mouth and nose. He tried to stand, but his legs wouldn't support him.

Ravencrest walked toward him slowly, savoring the moment. "Disappointing. The prophecies said you'd be legendary. You're just another child playing at power."

He raised his hand, claws extending. One strike would tear Xavier's throat out.

"No," I whispered, feeling helpless. Luna felt my anguish through the bond and howled.

Ravencrest's hand descended toward Xavier's exposed throat. Then Thelma screamed. It wasn't a normal scream. It was Alpha command, amplified by rage and desperation and love. The sound shattered stone, cracked the magical barrier, made every wolf present drop to their knees.

Power exploded from Thelma, golden light that burned away the restraints the guards had placed on her. The chains meant to keep her controlled melted like wax.

She shifted into her Alpha form mid run, hitting the arena barrier at full speed. The magical wall that had kept everyone else out shattered like glass under the force of her power.

Thelma landed between Ravencrest and Xavier in full Alpha wolf form. She was massive, nearly as large as Luna, her golden fur blazing with power.

"You want a fight, vampire?" Thelma snarled, her voice layered with Alpha authority that rivaled Ravencrest's ancient power. "FIGHT ME."

Ravencrest stepped back, genuine surprise crossing his face for the first time.

"Two newly awakened Alphas in one night," he said slowly. "This is unprecedented."

Thelma didn't respond with words. She lunged at him with speed that matched his own, her jaws snapping inches from his throat.

Ravencrest dodged, but barely. For the first time in the fight, he looked concerned.

"Interesting," he said. "Very interesting indeed."

The arena was chaotic now. Luna and Kael fought the vampire champions. Xavier struggled to stand. And Thelma faced the eight hundred year old vampire lord in single combat.

Through my bond with Luna, I felt her determination. Through my twin bond with Thelma, I felt her rage.

Both of them were fighting for the people they loved. Both of them were willing to die.

And I stood outside the arena, helpless, watching the two most important women in my life face impossible odds.

"Please," I whispered to whatever gods might be listening. "Let them survive this. I'll give anything. Just let them survive."

But the gods weren't listening. In the arena, Ravencrest smiled and unleashed his true power. The battle had only just begun.
