Either this was a joke or a very terrible nightmare.

I refused to believe any of this was real. Any moment from now I would wake up in Caelan’s arms with a tear-stricken face, telling him about how crazy this nightmare was.

And if that could not happen, Maryann would get off the floor and reveal that the dagger was fake. It would be revealed that all of this was just an act.
