"Three days ago? Where?" I asked sharply, feeling my chest get tight.
Sarah noticed my reaction and asked, "What? Is something wrong? Why do you look like that?"
"Just tell me where you saw him," I said not wanting to joke around. I needed answers.
But right then, Emma's phone started ringing. She looked at the screen, held up one finger to tell me to wait, and answered the call.
After talking for a minute, she sat up straight, looked at me, and said, "Are you serious? Okay, I'll be there in twenty minutes."
She closed her laptop fast and stuffed it in her bag.
"I'm so sorry love. There's an emergency at work. I have to go right now. Let's meet up again soon, okay? I will let you know "
"Wait, Emma..." I wanted to ask her more questions, but she was already walking away.
She said she saw Jake three days ago. But three days ago, he was supposed to be in Seattle on his business trip. Where did she see him? Was she in Seattle too?
I sat back in my chair feeling scared and helpless. I couldn't help but play the Instagram video in my head over and over again. I still wasn't completely sure if that was Jake or not.
"Was he lying to me? Did he not go to Seattle at all? Is he with another woman?"
I sat alone in that coffee shop for a long time. Even though the sun was warm and bright, I felt cold inside. I didn't know what I would do if Jake was really cheating. What would happen to Lily? What would happen to me?
I felt so distracted all day that I completely forgot to pick Lily up from school. Luckily, Jake came home early and noticed I hadn't left yet. He told me to relax and went to get Lily himself.
After he left, I forced myself to get up and start making dinner. Before Jake and Lily got back, Sarah showed up at our apartment. She had a key and treated our place like it was her own house.
I didn't like that, but Jake let her do it. When she saw me in the kitchen, she put her purse down and walked over. She leaned against the slab in the middle of the kitchen and asked, "Why are you cooking? Where's my brother?"
I was washing vegetables. "He went to pick up Lily."
"It's already late. He's just going now?" Sarah sounded annoyed. She always acted like she was the spoilt and bossy, even in my house. Her attitude toward me changed from day to day. Sometimes she was nice, and sometimes she was rude.
But I got used to it over the years. She was Jake's sister, and I had to accept the good and the bad of being part of his family.
"Do we have any shrimp? I want shrimp pasta," she said.
I pointed at the fridge. "Check in there. Your brother probably bought some yesterday."
Just then, Lily's sweet little voice called out from the front door.
"Mommy! I'm home! Why did you forget about me today?"
She ran over to me looking at me with her big innocent beautiful eyes, looking confused.
I felt terrible, but I smiled and touched the bridge of her nose with my wet hands.
"Mommy was busy today, sweetie. I promise I won't forget you again."
Jake walked in carrying Lily's backpack. He looked at both of us and smiled.
Sarah walked to the door and said, "Hey, Jake!"
"What are you doing here?" Jake asked. He put down Lily's stuff and took off his jacket. Then he came into the kitchen and hugged me from behind.
He took off my apron and put it on himself. "I've got this, babe. I will finish the cooking. Go play with Lily."
Sarah watched her brother and said in a sarcastic voice, "My brother is such a perfect husband. I want to find a guy just like him someday."
Jake said, "Get out of the kitchen and stop bothering us. Just wait for dinner to be ready."
"No, I want to help you!" Sarah said in a baby voice. She pushed her way into the kitchen. "I need practice being a good wife!"
I sighed when she said that. She was so lazy and spoiled. How could she dream about finding someone like Jake when all she did was sleep late and spend money? I felt sorry for whoever ended up marrying her.
I was already annoyed, but seeing Sarah made it worse. She was a grown woman who constantly asked her brother for money and attention.
The Collins family didn't have much when Jake was growing up. His parents worked hard at different jobs, and Sarah was sick all the time and needed special care. Life was really hard for them back then, and Jake felt helpless watching his family struggle.
But everything changed when my business started making good money. Jake and I basically supported his whole family, especially Sarah.
She always asked for money like we owed it to her. She didn't work or do anything useful, just being careless and lazing around, but she acted like she deserved everything. It made me so frustrated.
I took Lily's hand and left the kitchen. I didn't want to look at Sarah anymore.
“At least out of sight, out of mind” I murmured to myself as I walked away
Then my phone rang. When I looked at the screen, it was Emma.
