The house was finally quiet after I put Lily to sleep. I grabbed my phone and started scrolling through the streets of Instagram watching reels and taking screenshots of shoes and wigs I would like to get.
Just then I saw something that made me pause. It was a street food video that popped up on my feed.
I sat up straight and stared at the screen, but the camera moved too fast. My eyes twitched.
My heart started beating faster, and my hands felt sweaty around my phone. I looked at the time stamp. The video was posted just thirty minutes ago in the same city I lived in.
I replayed the video several times but couldn't get the glimpse of what I saw quite clearly.
My heart started to beat really fast like it was going to pop out of my chest, I quickly closed Instagram and called my husband, Jake Collins.
He told me he was on a business trip in Seattle for three days. But I just saw someone who looked exactly like him in that video with a woman next to him.
The phone rang five times before he picked up.
Jake's face appeared on my screen, a little blurry at first. He smiled at me and said, "Hey, babe!"
"Where are you right now?" I asked quickly, looking at everything behind him on the video call.
He seemed to be standing in a hallway somewhere. He was wearing a black shirt and tie. But the man in the Instagram video was wearing a gray jacket.
"I'm at dinner with some clients. I stepped out to take your call. What's going on? Is Lily okay?" He asked.
"Are you really in Seattle?" I asked again, not answering his questions.
"Of course I am. Why are you asking? Is something wrong?" He looked confused and worried.
"No, nothing’s wrong," I said quietly, then I asked, "When are you coming home?"
"Soon, I hope. I'll finish up here and come back as soon as I can. Do you miss me?" Jake smiled warmly at me. "I'll try to wrap this up early. It's getting late there. You should get some sleep, okay? I have to get back to dinner now. Love you!"
He blew me a kiss through the phone and ended the call.
I sat there holding my phone, feeling so stupid for being suspicious. Jake was a wonderful husband who loved me very much. He was handsome and kind, even though he had almost nothing when we first met.
His family didn't have much money, a little lower than average. His parents were regular working people, and his mom was sick a lot, and they lived in a small apartment in the city. But I chose him over all the other guys who liked me because he made me happy.
After we graduated college, I used my parents' savings to start a business with him. I worked day and night, meeting with clients and making deals while Jake handled the supplies and logistics.
Things were hard at first. I got so stressed I ended up in the hospital once.
But slowly, the business started doing well. We made good money and could finally breathe.
When I got pregnant with Lily, I decided to stay home. I let Jake run the company while I took care of our baby and our house.
Now Lily was five years old. We've had a nice life together, and people always said they wished they had what we had.
Jake felt bad that we never had a big wedding party. He promised me all the time that he would take care of me forever and make up for everything I gave up for him. How could a good husband like that cheat on me?
I smiled and shook my head. I must have been watching too many TV shows about cheating husbands. That's why I was thinking crazy things. I was being silly.
But when I laid down in bed, I kept thinking about that quick moment in the video. The man looked so much like Jake. Maybe I was just missing Jake too much.
But that gray jacket looked familiar too. It was the same one I helped Jake pack for his trip. So maybe the man in the video was wearing the same kind of jacket.
“Exactly. That's it. And that was just what made me confused.” I blurted out.
Jake came home the next afternoon, I wasn't expecting him this early. He came back with bags full of treats for Lily.
He hugged both of us tight, and the house felt warm and happy. I rushed to the kitchen to cook his favorite food.
While we were eating dinner, Jake looked at me and said, "You smell like cooking oil. Why don't you go take a shower?"
I sniffed my shirt and laughed. "That's the smell of good food! Don't you like it?"
He laughed too and touched my hair gently. Then he put some food in my mouth and gave Lily a piece too. "Okay, my beautiful girls. Let's eat!"
After dinner, I put Lily to bed and took a long shower. I walked over to Jake and smiled.
"Do I still smell like oil now?" I asked him in a flirty way.
Jake grinned and pulled me closer. "I missed you so much, babe."
He took my hand and led me to our bedroom. He seemed extra happy and excited tonight.
After we were done, I watched him walk to the bathroom. I was about to get up and clean up when his phone on the nightstand lit up. Someone sent him a message on WhatsApp.
I looked at the screen and my whole body went cold.
