Chapter 7

Chapter 7 – A New Observation

The party had ended hours ago, yet the image of her lingered—moving through the crowd, laughing, adjusting gracefully to every unexpected moment.

She wasn’t Katty. Not the Katty I knew. Subtle differences in her expressions, the careful way she responded to Alex’s jokes, the tiny hints of nervousness she tried to hide—all of it made her impossible to ignore.

Who is she really? I muttered under my breath, leaning against the wall, arms crossed. She was filling in for Katty tonight, pretending to be my partner. Temporary. Observing. That should have been all. And yet…

Her eyes flicked toward me at least twice, quick glances that betrayed awareness. The way she had instinctively leaned closer when Alex crowded her space—small gestures, yet deliberate. Clever, adaptable, and frustratingly human.

“She’s… interesting,” I admitted quietly, almost reluctantly.

Then I noticed another figure. Vivian. My long-time business partner. Elegant, composed, deliberate—the kind of woman who noticed everything. And tonight, her gaze was fixed on the new assistant.

“She’s new,” Vivian murmured, leaning slightly closer, voice soft, just enough for me to hear. A small, teasing smile tugged at her lips. “Not quite like your usual assistants.”

I didn’t respond immediately. I simply observed. But I could see the flash of curiosity in her eyes, the subtle tilt of her head. Vivian had always been perceptive—too perceptive sometimes. And this new girl… she had captured her attention in a way that made my chest tighten unexpectedly.

I stepped closer to Vivian. “Notice something about her?” I asked, voice low, controlled.

Vivian’s smile widened slightly, and she tilted her head. “I think she’s hiding something,” she said. “Not in a bad way… just… different. Confident, but careful. She’s aware. Very aware.”

I frowned, intrigued. Aware. Exactly. Too aware. She didn’t behave like Katty. Every laugh, every gesture, every glance was slightly… off. Not wrong. Not bad. But enough to make me pause. Enough to make me curious.

Alex, meanwhile, had been hovering near her, chatting with effortless charm, leaning slightly too close, laughing at the wrong moments. And I could feel it—the sharp, possessive flicker in my chest that told me I did not like this intrusion.

“She handled the champagne moment well,” Vivian added, nodding toward the memory of Catty almost spilling the drink and catching it herself. “Graceful under pressure.”

“Indeed,” I murmured, voice clipped, watching her closely. “Better than I expected.”

Vivian’s gaze flicked toward me, playful, challenging. “Do you always notice every small detail?”

I ignored the jab, letting my eyes linger on the new assistant. She had adapted, laughed politely, handled Alex’s flirtations, all while maintaining composure—and yet, I couldn’t shake the sense that there was more beneath the surface. More than a temporary partner. More than a simple stand-in for Katty.

“She’s clever,” I said finally, low enough for only Vivian to hear. “Adapts quickly. Observes. Anticipates. It’s… unusual.”

Vivian raised an eyebrow, a faint smirk playing on her lips. “Unusual can be dangerous,” she murmured, almost a whisper. “Especially when she’s around someone like you.”

I felt an uncharacteristic tightening in my chest at her words. Dangerous. Perhaps she was right. Or perhaps I simply wasn’t used to noticing someone like her. Someone who could stand beside me, handle herself with a mix of nervousness and poise, and still command attention without even trying.

“She’s temporary,” I reminded myself quietly, leaning back slightly. “Just tonight, a stand-in. Observation. Nothing more.”

Yet even as I repeated the thought, I couldn’t ignore the fact that every detail—the tilt of her head, the way she smiled at Alex, the subtle acknowledgment of my gaze—had lodged itself firmly in my mind.

Vivian tilted her head, watching my expression, clearly amused. “She’s different,” she said. “And I think you notice it more than you’d like to admit.”

I gave her a curt look, but didn’t argue. The truth was… yes. I noticed. And I was unwillingly fascinated.

I could see the sparks forming already. Tension between her and Alex, subtle challenges with Vivian, and of course… the underlying dynamic between her and me. All of it promised complications, intrigue, and… dangerous fascination.

The night had ended, but the observations were just beginning.
