Cora didn't run.

That was the part that surprised me — not the syringe, not the midnight infiltration, not the fact that she'd been planning to end my child's life while its mother slept. All of that tracked with the woman I was only now seeing clearly. What surprised me was that when my eyes lit the dark and my voice hit the air, she didn't bolt. She turned toward me with the syringe still in her hand and met my gaze with an expression that was closer to resignation than fear.
