It’s hot—every part of me. I curl my feet in my shoes. Being in his lap, this close to him, and knowing it’s just the two of us here has my heart racing too fast, especially after the question I’ve just asked.

He stays silent. His left fingers are perched on his left thigh, close to where my butt is.

My grip on my fork weakens as I inhale deeply and wait. And wait…
