I carefully set Sophia down and say to her, “Would you wait upstairs for me? I’ll come join you soon.”

She nods with a warm smile as she lowers her glasses. I kiss her forehead, then the middle of her head, before letting her go. Smiling, I watch her walk toward the door. She glances over her shoulder, smiles at me, then sweeps her gaze over the photographer’s things on the floor of our doorstep. “Are you going to throw them away?”
