I stared at her in stunned silence for a while before my shoulders relaxed and my hands unclenched. Faint prickles of pain arose from where my fingernails had been tightly pressing into my palms.

“Why?” I whispered, my eyes widened in disbelief, “why are you being so kind to me?”

I came here expecting her to lash out at me in anger, hatred, I was prepared for it, I would have accepted it without a single complaint.
