1. Losing the Baby

"Do you need help contacting your partner?" asked a sympathetic female doctor with glasses.

Ashley blinked, slightly dazed, then shook her head and smiled at the doctor. "I'm fine. My husband's busy, I'll call him later."

The doctor nodded and left Ashley. She gave a cynical smile, contrasting with the tears that finally streamed down her face. Today, she lost a 4-week-old pregnancy she hadn’t even realized she had.

Ashley never imagined today would turn out to be the most tragic day of her life. She started the day like usual—waking up early, making breakfast for herself, and doing laundry.

She sorted through the dirty clothes belonging to her and her husband. While checking every pocket, Ashley suddenly found a black lace thong in her husband's pants pocket.

That thong wasn’t hers. Ashley’s mind started spinning with countless thoughts. Her stomach began to ache, but she ignored it, thinking it was just a stress reaction.

Not wanting to be consumed by negative thoughts, Ashley called her husband. But he never answered. Ashley's bad thoughts grew worse, and she decided to go to her husband's office.

"Mr. Miller is not here," said the secretary when Ashley arrived.

"I know. I'm here to pick up something important he left behind," Ashley replied with a smile. The secretary dropped her suspicion and let Ashley in.

Maybe it was intuition, or maybe Ashley was just going crazy. She felt a strong urge to go to her husband's office and search around aimlessly.

Until she accidentally found a box containing an expensive designer bag. Ashley wanted to think it was a surprise gift from her husband, but the discovery of the black lace undies made it hard to imagine.

A post-it note was attached, with a series of affectionate messages. “For my beloved hotty nasty girl, Joy. Thanks for the unforgettable hot night."

Ashley closed her eyes tightly, unable to bear the bitter reality when it wasn't her name written there. Ashley's senses dulled instantly.

Joy? Since when did her husband have an affair with Joy? Wasn't their relationship just boss and assistant?

"Four years together, and this is how you repay me? What am I lacking, Gio?" Ashley whispered painfully.

Honestly, in their four years of marriage, Gio, her husband, had never bought her any expensive gifts.

She took a photo of the bag and the post-it before leaving Georgio's office, her husband. She no longer listened to the secretary's greetings as she walked out of the office.

On the side of the road, Ashley was confused. Following her gut, she tried calling Gio again. Just like before, no answer. When Ashley decided to cross the street, she did it while still calling Gio.

Ashley had already checked her surroundings before crossing, but suddenly, a speeding bicycle hit her, sending her flying.

That was when the numbness that had engulfed Ashley since the office vanished, replaced by pain in her body, her arm, and her stomach.

People gathered around Ashley, but the only thing she cared about was her phone. “Gimme my phone, I need to call my husband!”

And then, everything turned black.

When she woke up, she found herself in the hospital with an IV in her arm. Alone, without Gio's presence.

The doctor came in shortly after to explain what had happened. “We’re sorry to inform you that your baby didn’t make it.”

Ashley froze, not knowing where the word "baby" came from. The doctor continued, “You were four weeks pregnant. Your pregnancy was very early and fragile. The impact you experienced caused your baby to not survive,” the doctor explained further.

“I was pregnant?” Ashley asked, confirming. The doctor began to realize something was wrong and nodded slowly.

A flood of emotions filled Ashley's chest like a tidal wave. Shock, wonder, happiness, and sadness all mixed into one. This was the news she and Gio had been waiting for. Four years of marriage and they had tried everything to have a baby.

But when God finally gave them that gift, God also took it away. Or maybe Gio?

Tears uncontrollably streamed down Ashley's cheeks. The doctor stayed with her, patting her back as a form of support. But an emergency call forced the doctor to leave Ashley alone.

After calming herself down, Ashley decided to call Gio again. While waiting for the call to connect, Ashley suddenly heard a ringtone similar to Gio's.

Ashley's heart raced. She forced herself to get out of bed, then sneaked to the next room.

In the next room, there was a woman lying in bed accompanied by a man. Ashley's heart pounded when she saw the broad back she recognized so well. Not to mention the custom ringtone getting louder.

"Who's that? Why aren’t you answering?" the woman asked, her upper body partially covered by the man's back.

"It's not important," the man replied.

Tears streamed down Ashley's face again. That voice was definitely Gio's! What was he doing here?

"It must be Ashley, right? Answer it, maybe it’s important," the woman said again. This time with a coaxing tone, pretending to be a wise, innocent woman.

"Nothing's more important right now than you and our baby, Joy. Ashley can wait," the man replied, kissing the woman's hand.

It's clear now! How could so many coincidences happen in one day?

Ashley didn't know how she got back to her bed and could only sit in disbelief at her strange fate until the doctor returned and offered to call her husband.

Ashley said her husband was busy. “Can I go home now?”
