The Silence Before the Storm

Aurora Reed stood near the window of her hotel suite, watching the sky fade into gray. The day had barely begun, but the world already felt heavy. Below, the city moved on cars rolled forward, lights blinked, and people went about their morning routines. It was a normal day for everyone else.

But not for her.

This was supposed to be her wedding day.

She could still hear the voice of the makeup artist from earlier, the gentle laughter, and the woman saying she had never seen a more beautiful bride. She could still feel the softness of the dress hanging in the wardrobe, the white lace sleeves, and the hand-stitched detail. It was her dream dress.

But the dream ended before she ever walked down the aisle.

Dominic was gone.

No calls. No explanations. No reason. Just a white envelope delivered by someone else. Inside it were five words.

I can’t go through this.

There was no name signed. No message after that. He had disappeared quietly, like he had never planned to stay in the first place.

When she read the words, her heart stopped for a second. She waited. She thought he might show up later, with an excuse or a broken apology. But time passed, and nothing changed. The wedding planner started whispering into the phone. Guests began looking around. Her sister started crying. Her father sat down in silence.

Aurora stood still in her suite.

The sun had risen. The sun had set. And still, she had not moved.

Everything around her became background noise.

When the guests began to leave, she was no longer listening.

She didn’t cry. Her body felt too empty for that. Her mind drifted like it had disconnected from her skin.

She walked to the mirror once, just to look at herself. Hair styled perfectly. Face flawless. Eyes empty. She looked like a statue dressed in silk.
