The Billionaire’s Contract Bride
Danielle Harper was seated at the corner of the counter watching with baited breath how the clock was ticking towards six p.m. The previous night, she had worked a double shift and her feet were aching terribly. However, she managed to force a smile. Of course, she did not necessarily have to look like what she went through. Her colleague, Lisa came close to where she was seated with a fresh pot of coffee.
“ Did you have a Long night?” Lisa asked, pouring two mugs of coffee, one for herself and the other one for Danielle.
“Well , it was same old routine” Danielle shrugged as she continued “I have got to pick up Mia’s medications after my shift. The Doctor wants to check her blood pressure, sugar and cholesterol levels today.”
Lisa raised her eyebrow as she enquired about how her sister is faring at the hospital
Danielle replied in a low tone as though the walls were listening “ She is just there. The surgery is on hold as we are waiting for surgery approval. The Hospital has hinted that it might take weeks for the approval to be given.” She lifted the steaming mug as she wondered why the day started too early.
The bell at the front door rang and people started to trip in. Danielle moved round serving varieties of orders to customers like eggs, toast, among other mouthwatering dishes. She handed a plate of toasted eggs to Mr. Graham, who always appreciated her hard work by tipping her extra.
“Thanks a bunch, Danielle,” Mr. Graham said kindly. “I hope that your sister is getting better?
She nodded hopefully as she said “I hope so too.”
An hour later, Danielle went into the break room and pressed the button on her flip phone and her phone rang. As the phone rang the third time and she picked up, Dr. Patel’s voice came through in a calm and firm manner.
“Danielle, we reviewed Mia’s scans and She urgently needs that surgery within two weeks. Delay is very dangerous and could in permanent damage.”
Her heart beat increased. “Two weeks? Oh no! The notice is short but I will find a way, I promise.”
“ Try and Keep in touch. You can also Call if you have questions.” He said.
Danielle felt some lumps in her throat which were difficult to swallow as she replied : “Thank you, doctor.”
She closed her eyes for some seconds trying to distract herself from the reality of the moment .However, her efforts on self-distraction were futile as her mind was fixated on the two weeks’ notice given by the doctor just a moment ago. And she still needed to cover the operation cost.
That evening, Danielle changed into a nice dress, simple black gown that she had borrowed from a friend. The charity gala at Parkside Manor was her last hope at raising money urgently. She had signed up to sell raffle tickets, hoping that every dollar that she made would signal a positive step towards Actualizing Mia’s surgery.
The ballroom glittered with chandeliers and waiters who were adorned in white jackets. Danielle stood behind a small table and her tray of tickets were fast selling out. She forced herself to smile in order to attract patronage from guests.
“Ten bucks gets you three automatic chances to win am all-expenses- paid weekend in the Caribbean,” she said to a couple who were almost drifting away.
They handed her twenty bucks and She gleefully placed the tickets in their hands, whispering : “Good luck!”
A sudden silence occurred at the entrance to the charity gala. Danielle looked up immediately and she saw Reed Langford, a Tall and handsome gentle man who was glamorously dressed in a perfectly tailored suit and elegant shoes. He moved around with confidence and charisma. His blue eyes were all over the room till they rested at Danielle’s table. She was gobsmacked but she managed to maintain her composure and keep her gaze on the tickets.
He approached her and said “Hey, I need Three of those tickets” His voice was cool and sounded like music to her ears.
Danielle offered the tickets and requested for his name and he replied “Reed Langford” Thereafter, He dropped a fifty-dollar bill into her tray. She replied with a smile before saying “Thank you, so much Mr. Langford. I wish you the best of luck.”
He tucked the tickets into his breast pocket and stepped back, eyes on her. For a moment, her imaginations almost went wild but she had to maintain composure and not lose focus so easily.
Then he turned and vanished into the crowd at the charity event.
After the gala, Danielle hugged her coat around her so tightly as she was cold. She was so excited that She had sold tickets worth two hundred dollars. In fact, the massive sales had exceeded her expectation as it was way better than her goal.
She was so ecstatic and she removed her phone and texted Mia thus “I sold tickets for $200. I am praying for more my dearest Mia. Do not ever forget that you are the best sister ever and I love you so much and will do all within my power to save you. Cheers my love”.
Danielle then took a deep breath as she returned the phone into her pocket. Immediately, She caught a glimpse of a man in a dark suit standing not too far from the entrance and He was watching her closely.
“You are Danielle Harper, I guess?” he asked, stepping forward and approaching her.
She reluctantly replied with a frown. “Yes, that’s me. Is there a problem?”
“Oh, not at all. I come in peace. I am Thomas Reed, Mr. Langford’s assistant. He asked me to give this to you.” He handed to her a slim envelope which contained a simple card. Surprisingly, her name was boldly typed at the top right corner of the envelope. She tore the envelope and she found a card inside which read “Meet me tomorrow at 9 a.m. at The Langford Group situate at 120 Wall Street. I have a mouthwatering offer that you can’t refuse.”
At this point, She was wallowing in confusion but her mind was made up to do whatever was necessary in order to save her sister’s life. She folded the card, slipped it into her pocket, and hurried home.
That night, Danielle sat at her kitchen table as she placed the card before her. Mia was practicing piano in the next room; and her off-key notes floated seamlessly through the wall and interrupted the ambience of the room.
Danielle closed her eyes and for a second, she almost tore the card to pieces, but for the deep love that she had for her sister. Her hands were still on the card on the table and she was deeply struggling with thoughts pushing her to tear the card to shreds. On a second thought, she wondered "What price would she pay to keep her sister safe?”
