Chapter 1

The alarm blared, jolting me awake. I groaned, fumbling for my phone on the nightstand. 5:30 AM. Another day, another battle in the courtroom. I'm Mia Torres, and this is my life – early mornings, late nights, and the constant pursuit of justice.

I dragged myself out of bed, my feet hitting the cold hardwood floor. The mirror reflected a mess of black hair and bleary eyes. "Come on, Mia," I muttered to myself. "Time to save the world."

An hour later, I was transformed. My wild curls were tamed into a sleek bun, my dress suit pressed to perfection. I grabbed my briefcase and headed out, the weight of today's case already settling on my shoulders.

The streets of New York were coming alive as I made my way to the courthouse. Street vendors were setting up, the smell of coffee and bagels filling the air. My stomach growled, reminding me I'd skipped breakfast again.

"Mia! Mia Torres!"

I turned at the sound of my name, spotting a familiar face in the crowd. Sophia Chen, my old college roommate, was waving frantically, her press badge swinging from her neck.

"Sophia?" I said, surprised. "What are you doing here?"

She grinned, falling into step beside me. "Chasing a story, as always. But forget about me, look at you! Still fighting the good fight, I see."

I shrugged, a small smile tugging at my lips. "Someone's got to do it. How long has it been? Two years?"

"At least," Sophia nodded. "Hey, got time for a quick coffee? I'd love to catch up."

I glanced at my watch, hesitating. "I've got court in an hour..."

"Perfect! That's plenty of time. Come on, my treat."

Before I could protest, Sophia was pulling me towards a nearby cafe. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee was too tempting to resist.

We settled into a quiet corner, steaming cups in front of us. Sophia leaned forward, her eyes sparkling with excitement. "So, tell me everything. How's life in the world of high-stakes law?"

I took a sip of my latte, savoring the warmth. "It's... challenging. Rewarding. Exhausting. Take your pick."

"Sounds about right," Sophia chuckled. "Any big cases?"

"Actually, yes. I'm heading to court now for the final arguments in the Greenway vs. MegaCorp case. It's been a tough fight, but I think we've got a shot at taking down those corporate polluters."

Sophia's eyebrows shot up. "MegaCorp? Mia, that's huge! They're one of the biggest conglomerates in the country. Aren't you worried about the backlash?"

I set my cup down, meeting her gaze. "Of course I am. But someone has to stand up to these giants. If we don't, who will?"

"You haven't changed a bit," Sophia said, shaking her head in admiration. "Still the same fierce Mia, taking on the world."

I felt a blush creeping up my cheeks. "Enough about me. What about you? You mentioned a story?"

Sophia's expression turned serious. "Yeah, and it's a big one. I'm investigating a massive corporate corruption scandal. We're talking embezzlement, fraud, the works. If I can crack this, it could be the story of the year."

A chill ran down my spine. "That sounds dangerous, Soph. Are you sure you want to get involved in something like that?"

She waved off my concern. "Don't worry about me. I've got my sources, and I'm being careful. But listen, Mia, I might need some legal advice down the line. Would you be willing to help if I need it?"

I hesitated. Corporate law wasn't my usual arena, but Sophia was an old friend. "Of course," I said finally. "Just be careful, okay?"

"Always am," she grinned. Then her eyes widened as she glanced at her watch. "Oh shoot, I've got to run. I've got an interview in twenty minutes."

We stood up, gathering our things. As we stepped out of the cafe, Sophia pulled me into a quick hug. "It was great seeing you, Mia. Let's not let it be another two years, okay?"

I hugged her back. "Definitely. And Sophia? Watch your back with this story. Corporate types don't play nice."

She gave me a mock salute. "Yes, ma'am. Now go kick some corporate butt in court!"

As I watched Sophia disappear into the crowd, I couldn't shake off a feeling of unease. Something about her story nagged at me, but I pushed it aside. I had my own battle to fight today.

The courthouse loomed ahead, its stone steps already crowded with reporters and spectators. I took a deep breath, straightening my shoulders. Show time.

"Ms. Torres! Ms. Torres!" A flood of reporters surged towards me as I climbed the steps. "Any comment on today's proceedings?"

"Do you really think you can win against MegaCorp?"

"Is it true that MegaCorp offered a settlement?"

I held up a hand, silencing the barrage of questions. "No comments at this time. All will be revealed in court. Excuse me."

I pushed through the crowd, my heart pounding. The truth was, I wasn't sure if we could win. MegaCorp had an army of lawyers and seemingly endless resources. But the evidence was on our side, and I had to believe that would be enough.

As I reached the top of the steps, a sleek black limo pulled up to the curb. The crowd of reporters suddenly surged away from me, rushing towards the new arrival. I turned, curious despite myself.

The limo door opened, and a tall figure stepped out. Even from a distance, I could see the impeccable cut of his suit, probably worth more than my entire wardrobe. He moved with the easy confidence of a man used to power, his silver-streaked dark hair catching the morning sun.

"Mr. Reynolds! Mr. Reynolds!" The reporters clamored. "What brings you to court today?"

My breath caught in my throat. Dominic Reynolds. The CEO of Reynolds Enterprises, one of the largest corporations in the world. What was he doing here?

Reynolds smiled at the reporters, all charm and charisma. "Just here to observe, ladies and gentlemen. Reynolds Enterprises believes in staying informed about all aspects of the business world."

His eyes swept the crowd, and for a moment, our gazes locked. I felt a jolt of... something. Recognition? Challenge? Before I could analyze it, he had turned away, climbing the steps with purposeful strides.

As he passed me, he paused. "Ms. Torres, isn't it? I've heard a lot about you."

I straightened, meeting his gaze evenly. "Mr. Reynolds. I'm afraid you have me at a disadvantage. I know little about you beyond what the papers print."

A smile played at the corners of his mouth. "Perhaps we should rectify that sometime. Good luck in court today. I'll be watching with great interest."

Before I could respond, he was gone, disappearing into the courthouse. I stood there for a moment, unsettled. Why would Dominic Reynolds have any interest in this case? And why did I feel like I had just faced off with a worthy opponent?

Shaking off the encounter, I entered the courthouse. The cool air inside was a relief after the humid New York morning. I nodded to the security guards, my heels clicking on the marble floor as I made my way to the courtroom.

My client, Sarah Greenway, was already waiting outside. She was a small woman, her face lined with worry and determination. When she saw me, she stood up quickly.

"Ms. Torres! I was starting to worry."
