Chapter One

Slapped

“Get down here right now!” Kelvin shouted at the shaking woman standing close to the edge of the roof.

Abby’s whole body trembled. What was she going to do?

She wouldn’t come down. She couldn’t come down.

If she did, Kelvin would beat her again, just like always. She wasn’t going to take it anymore.

She clutched a piece of cloth in her hand. Her hand was still red and sore from the beating she got the day before. Her once beautiful face was now covered in bruises and boils. And obviously, both her eyes were now inside and full of dark circles.

She wasn’t the same woman anymore. She had become a shadow of who she used to be, and all because of the man shouting at her from below.

Kelvin let out a loud groan, he was clearly running out of patience. He clenched his fist and yelled, “Abby! Don’t make me come up there to get you! I’m warning you.”

But Abby didn’t stay quiet. Her voice shook with pain and fear, but she still replied, “Don’t you have any shame? You hit me every single day! Aren’t you tired? What kind of man beats his own wife like this? "I feel like I want to die!” She waved the cloth in the air, the reason for today’s beating.

Even though there were many maids in the house, Kelvin insisted Abby iron his shirt. Abby, still hoping her husband might one day love or at least appreciate her, agreed to the chores.

Not that she had much of a choice. If she had said no, he would’ve slapped her hard and still forced her to do it.

But she didn’t want trouble. She just wanted to be seen. So she said yes.

She had just started ironing her shirt when one of the maids screamed, “The food is burning!”

She was worried. Abby ran to the kitchen. Her heart was racing. But when she got there, there was no fire there, there wasn’t even any food cooking.

She immediately knew it was a trick to get her away from the clothes.

“Oh no!” She rushed back to the room, only to find out the iron had been left on the shirt and burned it.

Later, Kelvin came home and asked for his clothes. Abby had no words. She picked up the burnt shirt and ran.

At first, Kelvin didn’t understand what was going on. But once he did, his face turned red with rage and he chased her. But she was too fast. She had already run up to the roof, threatening to jump.

She didn’t really plan to do it. But she had to scare him enough so he wouldn’t hurt her again. But was it working?

“Oh, so now you talk back to me, Abby?!” Kelvin yelled from below, pointing upward at where she was.

Even from up high, she could tell he was getting more dangerous. Her heart pounded in fear. “I’m… I’m sorry,” she said quietly.

But Kelvin was already coming up, and at that, Abby didn’t know. She kept apologizing, still looking for him down below. When she didn’t see him, she stood up straight, feeling uneasy.

She felt a chill run down her back. Then she heard a cough behind her.

She knew that instant that he was there.

She slowly turned to see Kelvin standing with a cruel smile and a farrowed brow.

“Oh, now you’re scared, huh?” he sneered, walking even closer. “There’s no way out for you silly.”

Abby looked down. It was a long way to the ground, in fact, too far from where she stood. She couldn’t risk it. She knew Kelvin, she knew the monster she was living with too well. If she made one wrong move, he would push her and end her life right there.

"Her eyes were filled with tears. “I’m sorry." But it wasn’t my fault,” she said, still holding the clothes tight. She could only hope he’d believe her. But then again… when had he ever?

“I gave you one simple job,” he bent his face with a finger up as a symbol of what he meant.

“One single job” he repeated, getting closer.

“I finally remembered I had a wife. Today is our anniversary, three years. Can you believe that? How time flies. I was going to take you out and introduce you to my friends. But you messed everything up!”

“I didn’t mean to! "I heard someone yelling, I thought…” she tried to explain, stepping back.

But he caught up to her.

“You worthless woman!” he yelled.

And just then, there was a slap.

Her face snapped to the side, and a red mark appeared almost instantly as she grabbed her face.

Kelvin grabbed her by the collar, forcing her to look at him.

“A maid would be better than you,” he said coldly.

Tears streamed down Abby’s face. Even crying hurt now, her cheek had a cut on it.

This was her life. Three years of marriage filled with pain, filled with so many beatings and on top of the constant insults that came.

She was done.

“Then go marry a maid. Divorce me. "Let me go, I beg you!” she cried, almost shouting.

Her face was swollen, dirty with tears and snot. She looked nothing like the woman she used to be.

But Kelvin didn’t care. In fact, he actually smirked.

“Divorce you? "Why would I?” he laughed. Your family begged me to marry you. And you’re a great punching bag.”

He was right, that’s all she was to him, someone to hit, someone to insult, and worse, someone to use for sex.

He raised his hand to hit her again, but then his phone rang.

He looked at her with hatred in his eyes, then pulled out his phone.

“Sir Winston,” the man on the line said. “We just got word, J.C. Empires agreed to work with us!”

Kelvin froze for a second, then broke into a huge smile.

“Really? That’s amazing news!”

Abby had shut her eyes, waiting for another slap. But she slowly opened them when she heard his voice and how happy he was. She had never seen him like this.

The voice on the phone said something else that made Kelvin smile even more. “I’ll be there right away,” he said before hanging up.

Then he looked at Abby again, still smiling. “You just got saved by good news." But don’t think you’re off the hook. I’ll deal with you when I get back.”

With that, he threw her to the ground like garbage.

He stared at her one last time, then left.

Abby lay there, alone on the cold floor.

She didn’t cry anymore.

She was done crying for a man like Kelvin.

She was done with this marriage, three long years of pain and three long years of humiliation.

No, this was the last straw.

After a few minutes, she stood up, brushed herself off, and made a decision.

She was getting a divorce. No matter what it took.
