Chapter 1 Between Flowers and Sadness

The sun was beginning to set over the countryside, dyeing the sky in shades of gold and pink, as Mariana walked slowly toward the small cemetery at the edge of the farm. In her hands, she carried a bouquet of wildflowers, which she had picked that morning in the nearby fields. Although her fingers trembled slightly, the young woman tried not to think too much about what she was doing. The loss of her parents, which had occurred a few years earlier, still hurt deep within her. When she reached the graves, she knelt and placed the bouquet on the worn marble. She took a deep breath, feeling the fresh country air on her face. With a sigh, she leaned closer and whispered:"Today, more than ever, I feel like I don't know what to do. Every day that passes, I feel more alone... more lost."She looked at the stones that marked her parents' resting place, as if waiting for some answer that never came. She still remembered when her parents used to talk to her about how important it was not to give up, to keep going, but time had taken its toll on her hope. The farm, which had been her family's home for generations, was no longer the place she had known. The land, which once seemed to promise a life full of fruit, now seemed empty and without a future."Everything seems so far away, as if I'll never be able to escape this place..." she whispered in a trembling voice, her eyes filled with tears that refused to fall. The young woman looked up at the sky, as if seeking solace among the clouds. At that moment, she heard a noise behind her. She turned, surprised, and saw a young man with dark hair and sincere eyes approaching. It was Carlos, a childhood friend who had always been close, helping her whenever he could. Although their paths had diverged somewhat in recent years, he had never stopped silently supporting her.Carlos smiled softly when he saw Mariana in the cemetery, as if he knew exactly how she felt."Are you going to talk to them again?" he asked, his voice low and warm, respectful of the intimacy of the moment.Mariana nodded, unable to suppress a sad smile.“Yes… I need to tell them I'm so lost. I don't know what to do with my life, Carlos. This place doesn't give me anything anymore. The farm is in ruins, and the townspeople say I should sell it, move to the city, and start over. But what will I do there? How can I leave it all behind?”Carlos came over and crouched down beside her, looking at the graves with the same respect she did. He knew how much Mariana had lost and how difficult it must be to make such big decisions.“I know how you feel,” Carlos said gently. “But maybe change is what you need. You can't stay stuck here anymore. Maybe if you go to the city, you'll find something new, something to give you hope.”Mariana stared at him. Carlos had been her friend since she was little, always attentive and willing to help her, but he had never spoken with such encouragement about her future."Do you think I can do it?" she asked, searching his eyes for the reassurance she so desperately needed.Carlos smiled at her warmly, though his eyes revealed something more. There was more in his heart than simple friendship. He had always been in love with Mariana, though he never dared to say so. He saw her suffer and felt that her pain reached him as well. However, he never pressured her, knowing that she had to make her own decisions."I believe in you, Mariana. You are stronger than you think," he replied, then paused, as if considering something. "Look, I know the situation is difficult, but... I have something that could help you. I'll give you some money so you can start over. It's all I can offer you now, but maybe it'll be the push you need to take that step."Mariana looked at him in surprise."Really? I don't know what to say..." she said, touching her face as if waking from a dream. Carlos's gesture moved her deeply."You don't have to say anything," he replied, looking at the ground for a moment, his voice a little lower. "I just want you to have a chance. And even though I don't know what will happen, I want you to know that I'll be here whenever you need me."Mariana swallowed, feeling the warmth in her chest as she heard those words. She knew her life was about to take a major turn, and although she felt scared, she also knew she couldn't stay trapped in sadness any longer. She looked at her parents' graves once more, as if saying goodbye for good, and then turned her gaze to Carlos. Grateful and with renewed determination in her heart, she slowly stood up and said,"I'm going to the city. Thank you, Carlos. For everything."He looked at her tenderly, a slight smile on his lips, as she walked away, feeling something new begin to blossom within her.
