Chapter 1

May's POV

“Sign it.” A thick stack of paper hit the table in front of me with a thud, the sound causing me to flinch.

I stared at the paper silently, tears blurring my sight as the bold italics glared at me, mocked me.

“C–can we please think about it?” I asked, head lowered as I avoided staring my husband in the face.

I didn't want to see the disgust on his face.

I didn't need to see any reaction on his face or anyone's to tell me how pitiful and pathetic I was clinging to an already dead marriage.

For months I had tried to ignore it, pushing through the cold snorts and silent jabs as he was tired from work.

He was a billionaire, and I was just a housewife.

My life before meeting him had never been rich or great so I didn't know how exhausting it was.

I gave him the slacks, but now I regret it.

I regretted denying those actions.

I stared at George's face, his ever handsome face in a permanent scowl around me, but I remembered his smile around her.

I wouldn't have known about her if it weren't for Mattias.

After not coming home for days, I had grown slightly worried about him. I feared the worst of that incident happening again.

Just when I was close to calling the cops, Mattias ringed me and invited me to the company's dinner.

George was supposed to be there, but technically the main reason I wanted to go was see if he was alright.

Well news flash.

I did see him. I saw him perfectly healthy with his arms wrapped around a lady who looked just like me.

We had the same eyes, the same stature, everything. If you didn't look properly you'd think we were twins, but then it clicked.

The painful realization that I had been a stand-in.

I had cried my eyes out, denying it so righteously and not confronting him even when his best friend Mattias swore to the heavens that the girl— Unice— George's highschool lover who had returned was sleeping with my husband.

I foolishly defended him.

I naively thought that when he came home, he was going to give me an explanation, but all I got was this.

A divorce papers to the face and a cold sneering husband who didn't care about my feelings.

“May let's be honest with each other.” George’s cold voice rang in my ears, the very sound sending waves to my already shattered heart. “You knew this day was coming. Is that why you always lied to me?”

“Lied to you?” I asked, staring at the man I had come to know for good five years. Five years of marriage.

“Yes.” He replied steadily, his swept back blonde hair adding charm as he pierced at me with his teal blue eyes. “You knew you had no chance with me or in society, so you used me to climb up, didn't you?”

“What?” I muttered, staring incredulously at him like he had grown two heads. “What are you talking about?”

“Oh don't give me the bullshit May. I have had it.” He glared, clenching his fists. “It's a miracle how a beggar like you could think of a plan like fooling me and to think you had me all these years.”

I felt a pang in my heart, the stab of my past eating at me.

I stared at my palm, rubbing my fingers together as tears pricked my eyes.

A beggar.

To him that's all I'll ever be isn't it?

I looked up, green eyes locking with blue ones, “How could you say that to me?” I whispered, a whimper cutting out from my throat. “I thought you loved me.”

“I did too,” he let out a humorless laugh, passing a hand through his hair. “Trust me I did, until I found out what a liar you were.”

Why did he keep insisting I was a liar?

I furrowed my brows, not understanding what he was saying.

All he had mentioned from beginning till now was how he got lied to.

Did he think I lied to him?

“I don't understand why you keep calling me a liar.” I said, my words bringing silence as he stared at me.

I watched his jaw tick as he ran his hand through his hair repeatedly. “Fuck. I can't believe this. Uncie already told me, but I didn't want to believe it.”

“Unice?”

“Cut the bullshit already and sign those damn papers!” He growled, grabbing my arm harshly. “Or do you want me to spill the shit you pulled on me five years ago? I have proof! Evidence that shows you threatening Unice after she saved me!”

I struggled in his hold, rage burning in me as I heard his nonsense. “What the hell are you talking about?! I saved you, what proof? The cops can also vouch for me that day!”

Without warning, he pushed me onto the couch and I fell back with a startled yelp.

“Do you think I am a fool May?” He said slowly, his eyes blazing. “You could very well bribe those damned officers for all I care!”

“With what?” I spat back. “I was a beggar, remember?”

I watched as he froze, his brows folding into a curve and for a moment I wanted to laugh.

This man was stupid.

Even after all these years he had never changed and I wondered who was behind this— feeding him lies since he was still enough stupid to believe it.

“Enough!” George roared out in frustration. “I will not have you fool me again. I give you twenty-four hours to sign those documents or I'll make you sign them.”

“I don't care how many hours you give me, I am not signing anything!” I lashed out, glaring at him.

I didn't lie to him.

I didn't lie to anybody.

Five years ago in that burning warehouse, I was the one who pulled him out.

I saved him, and he saved me too, and sadly I had come to love this gullible idiot even when I knew I shouldn't.

For five years the police had been looking for clues on who kidnapped him and set the warehouse on fire, but found none.

If I am not mistaken, this might be their work once more.

They want us to seperate, but I won't leave. Not over my dead body.

“Fine, have it your way.” George snarled, cutting through the tense silence that had grown between us. “I'll give you a heads up though. What comes next it's all in your head.”

“Fine.” I repeated firmly, “if it proves I didn't lie to you, then I won't sign any documents. isn't that the reason for the divorce?”

Without a word, George turned his back, striding towards the door. “Watch your back May. From here on out, I'll make sure you regret ever lying to me.”
