Chapter 1

SLAP!

"You filthy whore! How could you get pregnant by some random guy you don't even know?! You're absolutely disgusting!" Martin Hunt’s voice thundered through the luxurious house.

"Why do you keep blaming me, Daddy?! Why don’t you ask your precious daughter why I did what I did?!" Brielle shot a bitter glare at Claire, her stepsister. Claire and her mother smirked with satisfaction as they watched her.

"Don’t drag anyone else into your mess! Learn to take responsibility for your own actions!"

"You should take responsibility for what you did to Mommy! She wouldn't have left if you hadn’t cheated on her with that slut and knocked her up!"

SLAP!

Brielle touched her stinging cheek. She probably needed to get her jaw checked at the hospital after all the slaps she'd taken today.

"Where’s your manners, huh?!" Martin barked. "Elizabeth is your mother!"

"She’s not my mother!" Brielle shot back. "I’d rather die than ever call her that!"

"Look how your daughter treats me, Honey," Elizabeth sobbed dramatically, playing the victim to make Brielle look even worse. "She’s always so mean to me and Claire when you’re not home. And I’ve done nothing but try to be a good mother to her."

"Bullshit! All you do is spend my mom’s money!"

"Shut up, Brielle!" Martin snapped. "If you say one more nasty word to Elizabeth, I swear I’ll throw you out! I won’t even acknowledge you as my daughter anymore! Now apologize to your mother!"

"I’d rather die than apologize to that bitch!" Brielle shouted without fear. "I actually pity you, Dad. Out of all the women in the world, you ended up with this piece of trash."

Elizabeth’s face tightened with anger, but she held herself back, letting Martin take care of her revenge for her.

"You ungrateful brat! Pack your things and get out of my house right now! I'm ashamed to have a cheap daughter like you!"

"Don’t worry, I’m leaving! I don’t need your permission!" Brielle yelled back furiously. "But I swear, I’ll get revenge for myself and for my mother. I’ll take back everything that was stolen from us. Mark my words!"

She stormed into her room, slammed the door shut, and burst into sobs. She couldn’t imagine how her mother must’ve felt, knowing Martin only married her to steal her inheritance. Once he got what he wanted, he divorced her and married his first love—Elizabeth.

She reached for the heart-shaped locket around her neck to speak to her mom in her mind, but it was gone.

"Where’s my necklace? Where did I put it? Did I drop it somewhere?!" Brielle frantically searched every inch of her room, but the precious heirloom from her mother was nowhere to be found.

"Hey, slut! You better start packing! You’re not gonna back out now, are you?!" Jessie’s voice came through the door. "What, you scared of being homeless now? Just get down on your knees and kiss my feet and my mom’s if you wanna stay."

Fuming, Brielle threw her clothes into a suitcase and swung the door open.

"You’re pathetic." Jessie laughed mockingly. "Finally getting kicked out like the trash you are."

Brielle glared at her stepsister with loathing. Jessie was the reason she’d made the biggest mistake of her life. Because Jessie had slept with her boyfriend, James, she had ended up drunk in a club and let all her pain out on a stranger.

"I’m glad I’ll never have to see your slutty face again. You’re just like your mother."

"How dare you talk about my mom like that?!" Jessie raised her hand to slap Brielle, but Brielle caught it midair and twisted it sharply.

"Agh! Let go, bitch!" Jessie screamed, tears springing to her green eyes in pain.

"I’m not letting you bully me anymore!" Brielle pushed Jessie hard, making her crash onto the floor, then stormed past her.

"Fuck you!"

Brielle smirked with satisfaction. A small part of her rage had finally been released. She walked downstairs and crossed paths with Martin, but he didn’t say a word. He didn’t even try to stop her. Her heart ached—wasn’t a father supposed to be her protector? But he had chosen his new wife and stepdaughter over his own blood.

I swear, one day I’ll make you all pay.

She stepped out of the house and walked along the sidewalk. She had no idea where to go. She didn’t have any family left who would take her in. Her grandparents had died, and her mother had been an only child.

Thunder rumbled in the distance. Raindrops began to fall, soaking the pale skin of the 22-year-old, though she didn’t notice—too lost in her own misery.

THUD!

"Ahh!" Brielle cried out in pain as a luxury car clipped her and sent her falling to the pavement. She clutched her stomach tightly, groaning.

"Ahh… my stomach..." she gasped, gripping her still-flat belly. Rain poured down suddenly, washing away the blood that began to stream from between her legs.

A beautiful woman in a white blazer quickly jumped out of the car and rushed to Brielle.

"Are you—" Her voice faltered when she saw the blood soaking through Brielle’s jeans. "Oh my God! Blood! Jack, hurry up!"

The driver rushed to pick Brielle up and carried her into the car. The black Rolls-Royce sped off, slicing through the downpour.

Moments later, they arrived at the hospital. Brielle, now unconscious, was immediately rushed to the ER by a team of nurses.

Her vision faded to black. The sounds of medical machines and urgent voices grew distant. Am I going to die? she wondered faintly.

The blonde woman paced nervously outside the ER, wringing her hands. "Please, God… save that young woman. I don’t want to be responsible for the death of an innocent mother and child."
