Chapter 1: I ran into her

Elizabeth Gilbert's eyes scanned the crowded shopping mall in New York, her mind preoccupied with the upcoming parent-teacher conference at her children's school. She had just finished a meeting with a potential client for her interior design business and was looking forward to a quiet evening at home.

As she turned a corner, her eyes landed on a familiar figure - her husband, Sam Gilbert. He was standing in front of a storefront, laughing and chatting with a woman and two children. The woman was clinging to his arm, and the children were gazing up at him with adoring eyes.

Elizabeth's heart skipped a beat as she felt a wave of confusion wash over her. Who was this woman, and why were these children calling Sam "Daddy"?

She approached the group, her voice shaking slightly as she spoke Sam's name. "Sam?"

Sam's head jerked up, his eyes locking onto Elizabeth's face. For a moment, they just stared at each other, the tension between them palpable.

The woman and children looked at Elizabeth in confusion, and Sam's face darkened as he took a step forward. "Elizabeth, what are you doing here?" he asked, his voice low and guarded.

Elizabeth's eyes narrowed as she took in the scene before her. "I could ask you the same thing, Sam," she said, her voice icy. "Who are these people, and why are they calling you 'Daddy'?"

Sam's face turned pale as he glanced at the woman and children, who were watching the exchange with growing unease. "Elizabeth, please, let's not do this here," he said, his voice low and urgent.

But Elizabeth was beyond reason. She felt like she had been punched in the gut, and she couldn't catch her breath. "Who are they, Sam?" she repeated, her voice rising.

The woman, Judy, stepped forward, her eyes flashing with defiance. "I'm Sam's wife," she said, her voice dripping with malice. "And these are our children, Emily and James."

Elizabeth's eyes widened in shock as she stared at Judy and the children. She felt like she was living in a nightmare, and she couldn't wake up.

Sam's face was etched with guilt and shame as he looked at Elizabeth. "I can explain," he said, his voice barely above a whisper.

But Elizabeth didn't want to hear it. She turned and ran, pushing through the crowds of people as she desperately tried to escape the pain and betrayal that threatened to consume her.

Sam chased after her, but she was too fast. She disappeared into the crowded streets of New York, leaving Sam and his second family staring after her in shock.

As they watched Elizabeth disappear into the distance, Judy's face twisted with a mixture of anger and fear. "What is going on here, Sam?" she asked, her voice trembling.

Sam's face was grim as he turned to Judy. "We'll talk about this later," he said, his voice cold and detached. "But first, we need to get out of here before Elizabeth comes back with a lawyer."

Judy hissed, realizing the situation, her eyes flashing with a mixture of anger and desperation. "Let's go," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.

As they turned to leave, Sam's eyes caught sight of a piece of paper on the ground. He picked it up, his eyes scanning the contents as his face turned white with shock.

"What is it, Sam?" Judy asked, her voice trembling.

Sam's voice was laced with guilt as he replied, "It's just a list." He held the paper in his hand, his eyes scanning the items scribbled on it. The list was for his two daughters, Sophia and Isabella, back in the upstate where his wife, Elizabeth, lived. The items on the list were mundane - groceries, school supplies, and clothes - but the weight of the paper felt like a ton in Sam's hand.

He knew he had screwed up. Big time. He couldn't legally marry in New York upstate and then remarry again in the downstate with a new family. He was in for a ride if Elizabeth wished to take it up legally. The thought sent a shiver down his spine.

Judy, his second wife, stood beside him, her eyes fixed on the list in Sam's hand. She was nervous, knowing she was in deep too. It's no longer a secret now that Sam was still legally married to Elizabeth, but she had convinced herself that his marriage was over. However, for Sam, he was just waiting for the right moment to divorce Elizabeth.

But now, as she looked at the list, she realized that Sam's marriage was far from over. He was still tied to Elizabeth, still responsible for her and their children. Judy felt a pang of jealousy, mixed with a healthy dose of fear. What would happen now that Elizabeth has found out about her and Sam? Would she take him to court? Would she demand a divorce and half of Sam's fortune?

Sam's voice broke into her thoughts, "Judy?" his voice laced with confusion.

"What will you do with the list?" she asked, trying to keep her tone neutral.

Sam's head was still lowered, his eyes fixed on the list. He whispered, "I have to get these items and send them to her."

Judy's eyes narrowed. "And why should you do that?" she asked, her curiosity getting the better of her.

Sam's shoulders shrugged. "That's the right thing to do. She's not coming back here to complete her shopping, you know."

But Judy knew that wasn't true. She had seen the way Sam's eyes lit up when he talked about his daughters, the way his voice softened when he mentioned Elizabeth's name. There was more to this list than just a simple shopping trip.

As she looked at Sam, she couldn't help but think about their own history together. They had met in Sam's office in the downstate, where he worked as a civil engineer. Judy had been his secretary, and their affair had started innocently enough - a flirtatious comment here, a lingering touch there.

But soon, their affair had blossomed into a full-blown romance. Sam would take Judy to fancy restaurants, buy her expensive gifts, and tell her how much he loved her. Judy had been swept off her feet, convinced that Sam was the love of her life.

And then, Sam had asked her to marry him. Judy had said yes, without hesitation. They had gotten married in a small ceremony, just the two of them, and had started a new life together.

But now, as Judy looked at Sam, she realized that their marriage was a sham. Sam was still married to Elizabeth, still tied to her and their children. Judy felt a wave of anger wash over her, mixed with a healthy dose of fear. What would happen now that Elizabeth is aware of her husband's second family?

As she looked at Sam, Judy knew that she had to confront him about his past. She had to know the truth about his marriage to Elizabeth, and why he had kept it a secret from her, making her think the marriage had ended.

"Sam," she said, her voice firm. "We need to talk."

Sam's head jerked up, his eyes locking onto Judy's face. He knew that tone, knew that look. Judy was angry, and she was going to demand answers.

"What is it, Judy?" he asked, his voice cautious.

Judy's eyes narrowed. "I want to know about your marriage to Elizabeth," she said, her voice firm. "I want to know why you kept it a secret from me, making me believe it has ended."

Sam's face paled, his eyes darting around the room as if searching for an escape. But Judy was relentless, her eyes fixed on Sam's face as she waited for his answer.
