CHAPTER 1: JOB HUNTING

Well, life has been hard for me and my sister, especially for me. Having to raise a sister at the age of 18 has taken its toll on me. I worked from 9 to six in the evening in one of the restaurants. I remember one day I was working, when one of my co- workers blamed me for stealing money for the restaurant. Yes, looking at me one could say that I did it. My sister needed to attend school and at that time I really needed the cash…but, believe it or not I did not steal anything.

My boss suggested that I sleep with him in order to keep the job, but, no. Not on my integrity. I refused to be trampled on. So, I quit. I have to admit that it was hard to find any good paying jobs and without proper education there was nothing I could do.

One day I woke up, roaming not roaming exactly, but I was on my daily job: job hunting on the streets when I came across a flyer of an assistant wanted in the most reputable company: THE CASTILLO TEXTILES.

I heard that the boss was ruthless and never had emotions. What would happen if I decided to go there, especially when I don’t have proper education? I’m sure he’ll cut me down to size.

The next day Indira woke up, wore one of her ‘best’ dresses in the wardrobe and her black pumps that pinched her feet in an uncomfortable way. Fixing her entangled hair, she took her purse and left for her job hunting. Reaching the Castillo Textiles, she was even ashamed to set her feet, because it was as white as the sheets of paper. So clean and smelling fantastic.

“Hello, ma’am. May you help me where the interviews are taken” she politely asked the receptionist lady who looked up from her desk and scanned her.

“The interviews are already done Ms…” she trailed off, not knowing her name.

“Indira Lyon,” she said nervously. Even the people were so much in order.

“Yeah right! Ms Lyon…the interviews are already done. I’m sorry I can’t help you” the receptionist said.

“Please, I beg you. Just help me please.” She folded her hands.

“Okay fine, Third floor on the left. The boss was taking the interviews there. Good luck” she said and looked at the computer screen. The lady needed good luck especially when the boss was in a bad mood. All the ladies and the men that came out were in tears, and definitely not tears of joy.

…….

Thunder…

I walked in without even waiting for a come in. I retreated backwards…in fear of being stroked by lightning. I’ll have to go job hunting somewhere not here. My steps were halted when a voice boomed.

“Who the hell are you? And who allowed you to come in?” the deep husky dangerous voice spoke.

“I…I…um. Came for…a job interview” I stuttered not knowing what to say anymore. My throat seems dry for some reason. This wasn’t me.

“Ares, stop it, you're scaring the poor lady!” a gentle voice spoke. Looking behind Ares, I saw a man of about 30 years old. Tall and handsome. But, not as handsome as Ares.

“What do you mean Anton? She is one of them… did you come here to spy on me?” Ares walked closer to me, with his advancing step I took a step backward. But, he caged me between him and the wall. His strong cologne hitting my nostril. I was so afraid that I nearly peed my dress if not for the man named Anton.

“You’re being paranoid now man! Just let the poor lady go!” Anton pulled him back. I was sweating so much.

“What’s your name and why did you come here?” Ares settled in his chair. His tousled brown hair dropped on his forehead. His shirt sleeves folded upwards and his strong veiny and hairy hands showing. He is such a charming and handsome man.

“Where were you born? Are you a native of this country?

The way he was looking at me made me unsettled. He had this tiny smirk on his face. His features said run…but I dared not to, for I needed a job. My sister will be left uneducated if I did.

“I’m Indira Lyons. I came here for a job interview” I tried by all means not to squirm under his scrutinising gaze.

“I was born and bred here. So, I’m a native of this country”

“Don’t you know that the interviews ended 1 hour ago” there is that smirk again.

“No sir, I didn’t” I fiddled with my fingers hoping that he could at least hear me out.

“Then do you know anything about textiles and anything close to it…or better yet, do you have any qualifications in textiles” I shook my head in denial. I knew nothing about textile or anything. Not even a single certificate to support my job hunting.

“But, I’m a fast learner sir if you can teach me” I said nervously. I really need this job.

“I’m sorry, Ms Lyon…you don’t qualify to be my secretary” I extended my hand in a form of gratitude, but he didn’t dare touch it. He just shoved his hands in his trouser pockets and stormed out.

With a dejected heart, I left the company. I was hoping he could hire me, I saw their pay was good. I could re-decorate my apartment and buy myself a car in 3 months if I manage to save.

I was sitting on a bench outside the company. It was scorching hot, but I was so cold. I was even thirsty so much that my lips were parched. Realizing I had not eaten anything in the morning. Nor had I taken Ion supplements.

“Hey did you not get the job?” someone said, and looking beside me I saw that it was the receptionist. I nodded my head.

“By the way, my name is Bonita.” She introduced herself.

“Hi Bonita. Do you have some water” I couldn’t control myself anymore.

“Yeah, I do. Let me go fetch it. By the way you got the job. You’re needed here tomorrow morning” she wasn’t playing a prank on me was she?

“I’m not kidding. The boss just called me to tell you. I guess his friend knocked some sense into him” she said and ran into the company.

My head was spinning. I felt numb as I sat down. I decided to stand up, but my legs were jelly and I was so weak to even stand for long.

August walked out of the company when she saw someone’s head dangling by the road, not even one person dared to help her. He rushed where the lady was.

Removing her hair from her face, he was shocked.

Indira!!....
