Bride of convenience Wife of love
Elara's pov
“It's good news, Mrs Mitch. You're pregnant”
My hands flew to my mouth as I felt my lips curve into a smile.
“Really? Doctor?” I asked,to be sure I heard her right the first time.
“Yes ma'am!”
Water rushed to my eyes as she confirmed.
Oh my God!
Words couldn't describe the amount of joy rushing through my veins right now.
“I'm pregnant. I'm really pregnant. I'm gonna have my own baby” I said to the doctor, and she nodded at me with a bright smile.
“I need to tell my husband!” I said and dipped my hand into my purse, but I paused.
“I probably shouldn't yet” I said, raising my head to meet the doctor's gaze.
“Can I get the printed report?” I asked.
“Definitely ma'am” she said and got up from her seat.
I was left alone in the office, and even as I took steadied breaths, I couldn't wipe the bright smile on my face.
I can't wait to tell Ivan that we'll be having our own baby soon. Our family will finally be complete after all these years” I thought happily as I waited for the doctor to be back.
The door clicked open, and I turned back to see the doctor making her way back in.
“Here Mrs Mitch,” she began, holding out a set of papers.
“This is your pregnancy report” she added, holding out one of the papers.
“These are the things you should avoid, for your health and that of your baby” she continued, stretching another set of papers .
“Thanks doc!” I said, receiving them.
“Would you like to register for antenatal care now?” She asked, and I thought for a second before giving a response.
“Not yet. I'll come back with my husband to do that!”I said..the thought of Ivan's face lighting up at the thought of the news was enough to bring a wide smile to my face.
I looked down at my phone.
“Babe,” the message I had sent was displayed on the front screen.
I had texted before I exited the walls of the hospital, and now thirty minutes later, while in the taxi home, there was still no response even though the message had been delivered immediately.
“He's probably busy,” I told myself before going to the internet to search for things related to babies.
My ride home was full of laughs reverberating in my ear. I had spent the last few minutes laughing at different baby videos on the gram.
My happiness was more cemented than ever. Ivan, I, and the baby are going to be one little happy family, the family I didn't have growing up.
I had gotten from the taxi, but I stood outside, my gaze up at our little house. I put my hand on my stomach.
“I can't wait for you to come into this world baby”
I walked to the porch and unlocked the door.
I paused in my tracks as my eyes came in contact with the living room.
“Oh my God!’ I said out loud, walking further in.
The whole floor was littered with everything possible. My eyes caught a note lying on the table.
“Came back home for a file, and I made a mess searching for it. Will be back late. Xoxo”
Ivan. I grumbled as I recognised the handwriting..
He always has a habit of making a mess all the time, and I spent the next hour cleaning the mess.
“Phew!” I said as I trashed the last piece of paper.
“I need a cold shower,” I said with a groan as I walked into the room, but the small smile tugging at the side of my lips almost disappeared when I saw it.
He really had to mess up here, too?
“Come on,El. Today's a good day. Be happy!” I said to myself, and I walked in and began cleaning up.
I made a mental note to discuss this issue of making a mess with Ivan after telling him about the baby.
The room was a lot messier than the living area, and by the time I was done, I was completely hungry and burned out.
I decided to take my shower before making a meal. I stood under the shower for minutes. It felt so soothing to my skin, but the sound of my phone ringing hurried me out.
“Shit!” I cussed as I picked it up.
It was an alarm, one I had set for grocery shopping.
I hit my right palm on my forehead. How could I forget my grocery run.
I hurriedly put on a pair of sweats, and within minutes, I was out on the road again.
I remembered my husband's note. “.... I'll be back late”
An idea lit up in me. I realised it's been so long that both of us had any special meals. Since we're cutting costs and can't really eat out like we used to.
I concluded. Tonight,I'll make his favourite meal and tell him the good news over it.
I happily skipped to the grocery store like a teenager who just found love.
With my happy thoughts keeping me company, grocery run was super fast and fun.
I returned home and decided to have some fruits first, just like the doctor had suggested.
“I'll eat dinner with my husband!” I told myself as I prepped the ingredients.
But even after an hour had gone past dinner time, I was still sitting on this sofa, waiting for him to come.
He wasn't replying to my texts, and I didn't want to call. I remembered how he had told me not to call him at work, especially when he was working late.
Another hour went by, and he still wasn't back. This time, I couldn't help it, risking his scolding, I dialled his number, but till he beep tone came on, there was no response.
I tried again.
And again.
And again.
But it was still to no avail.
My brows creased as my worry began to grow.
I was about to dial his number again when my screen lit up.
My heart leapt as my ringtone floated into my ears.
I picked up the call without looking.
“Ivan?”
“Am I speaking to Elara Mitch?”
My smile dimmed. It wasn't him.
