Betrayal

“He will definitely be delighted with the surprise I brought!”

Rui walked steadily with both hands full—on his left he held a paper bag containing a gift, while on his right he held a small cake box decorated with candles. A smile spread across his face, as if all the joy of the day belonged to him.

Today wasn't just Arlo Snell's birthday—her beloved fiancé—but also a moment to congratulate him on his new position as vice president. Rui had meticulously planned the surprise, arriving at his office at exactly eight o'clock—after he'd texted her that the office party would end around 8:15.

Her steps swayed lightly as she entered the office lobby, greeted the few remaining employees with a polite smile, and then headed for the elevator. Her fingers pressed the button for the top floor, the floor that now housed Arlo's office. The seconds inside the elevator felt warm, filled with anticipation. She imagined Arlo's surprised and delighted face upon seeing her suddenly arrive.

As soon as the elevator doors opened, Rui paused for a moment. Standing directly in front of him was a tall, burly man with a mixed-race face. Behind him was a young man who appeared to be his assistant. The man stepped slightly to the side, allowing Rui room to pass. Rui bowed politely and then replied with a brief thank you.

But unbeknownst to her, the mixed-race man was staring at her back with a look of interest. His gaze wasn't just a glance, but rather one filled with curiosity.

Lowie—his assistant—mumbled softly, “Who is that beautiful woman? What is she doing at the company so late at night when everyone has gone home?” The mixed-race man only grinned faintly, didn’t answer, then stepped into the elevator, which closed again.

Rui gently placed the cake on the reception desk and carefully lit the small candle. Then, she hugged it tightly as she slowly walked towards the corner room. The door to the room happened to be ajar. There was a small gap, allowing Rui to push through.

But his steps stopped right in front of the door. A long sigh from inside made his body stiffen. His brow furrowed, and the hand holding the doorknob suddenly trembled. Slowly, hesitantly, Rui pushed the door open slightly to peek inside.

“Akhhh Arlo stop hmpp don’t leave a mark there, Rui will get suspicious later,” moaned the beautiful woman who was on Arlo’s lap—who was tilting her head when her neck was touched by Arlo’s lips.

In an instant, Rui's eyes burned. His breath hitched. The cake he was holding nearly slipped from his hand. It was even more painful when Rui recognized the owner of that white back: Amber Philomena—his own younger sister.

Rui flinched back, the cake box and paper bag she'd been clutching tightly now feeling utterly disgusting. Without hesitation, she turned, walked quickly to the trash can at the end of the corridor, and threw them into it. The thud of the cake making it fall made her feel even more nauseous.

Just leaving felt like it wasn't enough; it wasn't fair if he was the only one to suffer. His feet, which had been taking a step away, suddenly stopped. Rui turned around again, returning to the door. With trembling hands, he pulled out his phone and recorded every second of the disgusting act behind the door.

Once he felt it was enough, Rui stopped the recording. Silently, he turned and walked quickly away from Arlo's office. Exiting the elevator, he entered the nearly empty lobby. As soon as the glass doors opened, a cool night breeze hit his face. For a moment, Rui felt a tinge of relief.

With trembling fingers, she opened the online taxi app. It only took a few minutes for a car to stop in front of her. Rui had been dropped off by her friend earlier; there was no way she could call Amber to take her away from this misery. She needed a place to vent all the stifling feelings.

But unbeknownst to her, a pair of eyes had been watching her all along. The mixed-race man she'd met in front of the elevator was now standing near the building's pillar, observing her every movement. His gaze was deep, filled with unfathomable interest. His lips curved into a thin smile.

“Looks like that woman is heartbroken, she came back out so soon after us,” Lowie muttered in surprise.

The mixed-race man didn't take his eyes off the car carrying Rui away. His smile widened, almost slyly. "Follow that woman!" he said flatly, confidently, "I must have her tonight."

The dim lights and pounding music created a cramped and wild atmosphere in the club. At the bar, Rui was already holding his third glass of chilled whiskey. However, being drunk wasn't enough to quell his anger. The image of Arlo with Amber on his lap kept replaying in his head, stabbing him in the heart with unbearable disgust.

"Tonight, I can definitely find five men better than Arlo. I'll prove to you that there are plenty of men I can date," she muttered quietly but firmly, as if challenging herself. She downed her glass again and then handed it to the bartender.

But before the bartender could pour another, someone stood beside Rui. With a slight shake of the head, the man signaled the bartender not to refill Rui's glass. Rui, already drunk, laid his head down on the bar counter.

Her long hair fell over part of her face, allowing the man who had just sat down beside her to gaze at Rui's face. After a moment, Rui lifted her head with a wistful gaze.

“Where’s my drink?” she asked, the waitress pretending not to hear—busy mixing another customer’s drink.

“How about a drink with me?” the man’s deep voice rang clearly in her ears. Rui turned her head, her eyes narrowing, trying to recognize the unfamiliar face that felt familiar to her.

“You’re so handsome____are you married?” she asked in a hoarse voice mixed with alcohol.

The man simply shook his head, then asked back, "Will you be my wife?" Rui suddenly got down from her chair, standing with a slightly swaying body. She stared deeply at the man, then both hands gripped the broad shoulders in front of her.

“Do you want to sleep with me tonight?”
