"Please Samantha, last week you promised you would go with me," Becca says, sitting next to me on the double bed.
"I know I promised, but now I don't want to go anymore," I try to explain, which will be difficult since she never gives up what she wants.
"Then tell me why you don't want to go anymore? If you give me a valid and convincing explanation, I'll stop bothering you and give up going," she says. I don't really have an explanation, a real reason. I just don't want to go, I've never been good at these kinds of parties because I always end up drinking too much and making some stupid mistake that in the end I regret and makes my father go away for good.
"I'm not feeling well, that's all," I say and get a doubtful look.
"I don't know why I haven't found it convincing yet," says my friend.
"You're not going to give up, are you, Becca," I say and let out a short sigh.
"Not ever!" she laughs, making me roll my eyes.
"All right," I say finally.
"What? Really? " she asks excitedly.
"Yes, Rebecca, I'm going to this crappy party! Satisfied?" I say to her as I get out of bed and head for the bathroom.
"Hellooo, I'm more than satisfied. "I'm more than satisfied," she says, jumping up and down on my bed like a child.
"Stop it and now excuse me so I can get ready. "I say before closing the door behind me.
"And who says I want to see you naked? Come on Samantha and by the way, I'm going to your hot brother's room to get ready there," she shouts.
"Spare me this stuff okay? I don't care about that! " I don't care about that," I shout back, hearing her laugh as she slams my bedroom door.
I met Becca when I was eight and she was ten, and we haven't been apart since. She is a great girl, has a great personality and is always with me when I need her most and I think I am the same way with her too, Becca currently hooks up with my dear and only brother, Sean. They have an undeniable chemistry and I know that even though they are not really boyfriend and girlfriend, they both really like each other and I wish that one of these days they will be together for real... After finishing my shower, I wrap myself in a towel and go to my closet and honestly I don't know what to wear, I am terrible at choosing clothes and surely I should have asked my friend to choose something for me to wear. Finally I end up choosing a tight red dress, which is a few inches above the knee, but not vulgar. Its neckline is not so large and leaves the right size for my breasts, the straps are a little dropped at the shoulder and I feel comfortable in it. I wear a Scarpin of the same color and decide to let my blond hair loose, I make some curls in the ends and let them hang down to my waist, I decide to apply some light makeup and before leaving I grab my iPhone and my wallet-purse.
Seconds later I am already knocking on Sean's bedroom door calling for Rebecca, who says she is ready and nothing, which made me more impatient.
"Becca I am going to count to three and if you don't get out of there, I swear I will quit going with you! " I say loudly and hear Sean grumble.
"I'm coming, girl," she shouts, making me roll my eyes.
"1, I'm serious! 2, leave it for Sean later..." before I get to three the door is opened. Sean is shirtless showing off his tattoos, and I think Daddy has no idea they exist.
"Let dad see those tattoos, Sean. " I say.
"No kidding! Even you little sister? " he says, smiling sideways.
"I'm just saying, but enough talking and please Rebecca, let's go soon..." I whisper to my friend who has her arms around Sean's waist.
"Sure, and by the way, you look great, Samantha.
I'm sure you'll make it today! " she says laughing.
"No way you're going out like that, Sam! " says my brother implying.
"You don't boss me around and Becca, I'm not stuck. I'm not dating because I don't want to, I have plenty of suitors. Simple as that," I say.
"And who are these hawks after you? Does dad know about this? " Sean asks.
"Come on, kid, I've grown up. " I'm smug.
"You've grown up but you don't know anything about what goes on in a man's head," he says.
"I'm glad I don't, after all you must have only shit in your heads. And you know what? I'm waiting for you downstairs, Becca," I say, slightly annoyed with all that talk. Sean has the same manias as our father, the mania of wanting to protect me from everything and they should already know that someday I will have to get hurt to know how to survive in front of everything. I love them for this, they and Becca are all I have since mom died, whenever I need my brother and my best friend are there for me, no matter what.
"You shouldn't be rude to him. " says Becca as she comes down the stairs.
"I know. I just don't like all this protection. " I confess.
"I understand, but when you get home, talk to him. Sean loves you very much, just like I do," she says, and then I give him a hug.
"I know, I'm sorry," I say lowly.
"All right, now let's go because we're late," she says and drags me out the door to her black car, she calls it herself: "Moose" and you will understand why.
Incredibly, the party wasn't that bad and I was able to have fun with the friends that Becca made at college. It was a celebration for the seniors who would be graduating next month and since my friend got into college before me, she already got along very well. And about taking some courses, I plan to do that for the next year, I will do photography and it is what I love the most.
I close my eyes and let myself be carried away by the contagious beat of the music, I move my body according to the rhythm and try to take my little problems away from me, today I want to have fun or rather relieve myself. I'm glad I decided to accompany my friend, I wouldn't want to stay in the boredom that is my house when Sean lives inside the room on the weekend and my father disappears.
"Samantha, shall we have a drink? "
